Library

The St John Vianney Library is a friendly and inviting space, designed to meet the students’ recreational reading needs as well as providing a variety of resources to support and enhance the curriculum.

The library is staffed two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday with each class having one hour lessons. During this time students participate in activities designed to promote appreciation of quality literature and development of information literacy skills. In addition to encouraging a love of reading through regular borrowing, lessons also include the Health units from the Australian Curriculum.

The library is also open during Lunch or Recess twice a week to allow students additional time to exchange books, read, draw, play games and Lego. A craft group is available at this time for senior students.  During the winter terms, a morning reading club is run once a week where students and their family members are invited into the library from 8.30am to read quietly.

Each year the library celebrates the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week, with activities and competitions based around the short-listed books. Students and staff celebrate Book Week by dressing up as favourite book characters and inviting family members and grandparents to share the fun. 

Other special events on the library calendar include National Simultaneous Storytime, the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge and the Great Book Swap for Indigenous Literacy Day. The library also hosts Scholastic Book Fairs and Book Club throughout the year which allows students access to a range of affordable and new release books whilst raising commission to purchase new books for the library.
