Welcome to the end of Wk 1. I have placed a prayer below that I shared with staff this morning.
Prayer for a New Normal
The World as we knew it is gone, and for what feels like such a long time we have experienced so much hardship during this Pandemic. As we prepare to walk into the future we pray for the "new normal" to come. May our hearts be unified in You more than ever. May the tender moments of seeing someone again in person be all the more rich and treasured. May the reunions, interactions, and moments ahead be held in such intentionality and may we turn to You in sincere gratitude. Help us to come out of this Pandemic better, not bitter. Help us to become more considerate of others, more mindful of how we can help one another, and how we can serve You and Your children well. We thank You that no matter how dark the night may get, there is the hope of the dawn to come.
Welcome back Mrs De Rosa
Nina has returned to SJV from this term onward after taking a years maternity leave. She has returned to her role as Assistant Principal and the head of Learning Support. It was wonderful to see Nina in all the children's check-ins this week as she slips immediately back into her role as educator.
Friday Magic Shows
Zoom links were sent to parents for our upcoming magic Shows in a recent email. If you did not receive these, please contact the Front Office.
Return to School
As I indicated through my correspondence during the holidays, we now have a staged plan for returning to school, which is fabulous.
If you missed this correspondence, the return to face to face schooling will be as follows:
- Kindergarten, Years 1, 2, 6 from 25th October (Week 4, Term 4)
- Years 3, 4, 5 from 1st November (Week 5 ,Term 4
Covid 19 - A Message from Catholic Education
During the next few weeks Catholic Education will instigate plans for the safe return of students and staff. Like all schools, St John Vianney's follows various COVID-19 Safe requirements as advised by ACT Health which seek to prevent and minimise the transmission of COVID-19.
I want to emphasize that the safety and wellbeing of students and staff is the primary consideration of any decision related to re-opening schools. These requirements are designed to:
- minimise unnecessary physical interaction between students on school grounds;
- ensure that students learn and play with those in their cohort, wherever possible;
- minimise opportunities for transmission and enhance contact tracing;
- minimise the potential for widespread infection across the school and wider school community.
- ensure that handwashing, hand sanitising and school cleaning are in line with ACT guidelines.
All our school staff have been encouraged to be vaccinated, and I can advise that many of our staff are vaccinated or in the process of organising to be vaccinated.
Due to Australian privacy law requirements, we are unable to advise the vaccination status of individual schools or school staff.
Staffing
We would like to welcome Mrs Sarah Emerson back to St John Vianney's for 2022 as she has accepted a 12 month contract. Sarah has been a great addition to our school and is looking forward to continuing her relationship with the SJV community.
God bless you and your families

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
with Nina De Rosa
Welcome Back!
Briefly, for those who I haven’t met yet, I’m Nina De Rosa. I have been on maternity leave for 12 months as I welcomed Matteo to our family, September last year. It is fantastic to be returning to my Assistant Principal role.
I have enjoyed reconnecting with all SJV students via Teams during their check-ins this week. Although challenging it has been wonderful to see how expertly students have embraced online learning and are so adapt at utilising the MS Teams tools. I enjoyed seeing all the happy smiles and have also appreciated the enthusiastic welcome back. Thank you.
World Space Week
This week we celebrate World Space Week. World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events:
- October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration
- October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
There has been excitement and world coverage about various people around the world taking the leap and travelling into space. This event highlights the importance of following your dreams no matter ‘how out there’ they may seem.
I fashioned a stunning headpiece at the class Check-ins this week in celebration. We had a little fun guessing why I chose this particular attire. To support the event, remote learning and Stem, classes have received a World Space Week Learning Grid to explore. These activities are optional and may provide families with alternate family activities during lockdown. Please note - Merit Awards will be handed out when we return to school.

Youth Ministry Update
Sunday Resource
For this week’s Sunday resource, please access this link: https://www.stkevinsparish.org.au/childrens-family-page/ and select the Junior worksheet under Sunday 10th October. This worksheet reflects upon this Sunday’s Gospel reading (Mark 10: 17-30) where Jesus is asked “Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”. Christ’s response to this question not only challenges us, but also asks us to question what room we are making for Jesus in our everyday lives. This week offers us an opportunity to once again put Christ in the centre of our lives as we walk with him towards eternity.
Parish News
The Our Lady of The Annunciation Parish is continuing to livestream Sunday masses on their YouTube channel at 9am. To access the mass for the 28th Sunday in Ordinary time (Year B), please access this link: https://www.youtube.com/user/stjjv
The archdiocese is continuing to livestream mass from The Cathedral daily at 12:15pm and on Sundays at 11am with the archbishop. An online Rosary is also available on Wednesdays and Fridays at 4pm on Zoom. Please visit https://www.catholicvoice.org.au/ for more details.
Youth Group
The Weston Creek youth group is on again this Sunday at 4pm on our online meeting room in Whereby! This week we will be continuing to look into our semester theme of prayer by diving into The Rosary. This week we will be joined by our very own Fr. Michael Lim who will be talking to the students about the powerful prayer of the Rosary and how it can be incorporated into our daily lives! Please feel free to contact me for more details and access to our link!
Yours in Christ,

For something a little bit different - instead of tuck shop lunch for school, we have some quick and easy dinner recipes for you to try. The children can still help cook and clean up - a great life skill that my 22 year old son is learning through lockdown!!
Here are a few easy recipes that you can make.
Don't forget we would love to share your recipes in the newsletter send them into office.sjv@cg.catholic.edu.au. Take a photo and we will add them to the next newsletter.
Thanks to Mrs Reed for her contribution this week.
Grandma's Scones
3 cups of SF Flour (can use GF Flour)
3 tablespoons of cornflour
3 nobs of butter/margarine/Nuttelex
Milk- can use light or soy etc
Teaspoon of sugar
Method:
Mix all dry ingredients together.
Rub through 3 nobs of butter
Add milk until mixture is not too sloppy. Use a butter knife or hand to mix.
Turn out dough onto a floured bench, sprinkle with a little flour so not to sticky and use a cup or cutter to cut the dough into circles.
Place the scones into a lined or floured baking tray. Make sure they are all holding hands or touching each other.
I use an ice cream scoop and just put the scoops of the dough mixture straight onto the tray.
Cook in a hot oven on the middle rack for about 12 minutes. Wait until the tops are slightly brown.
Turn out the cooked scones and place in a colander lined with a tea towel.
Eat whilst still warm!

ELC NEWS
We hope you are all safe and well and have had the opportunity to enjoy some precious family time over the school holiday period. The ACT Government has announced that Preschool will resume on Monday 25 October. Until this date, education and care services remain restricted to children who need to attend. This includes children experiencing vulnerability; children whose parents or carers cannot work from home; and children whose parents are working from home and cannot reasonably provide care whilst working.
If you did not require care during lockdown in Term 3 and your circumstances have changed, and you require your child to return to preschool prior to 25 October, please email me karen.leighton@cg.catholic.edu.au so I can ensure adequate staff are rostered for onsite learning. If your child was already in attendance during Term 3 lockdown, you do not need to contact again unless your care requirements have changed.
An email will be sent by the end of week 3 outlining the drop-off and pick-up procedures that we will need to follow to be COVID19 safe.
St Jude’s Mini Floriade
Have you seen the gnomes in our mini St Jude’s Floriade garden? So many local community members have spotted our gnomes on their daily walks. We have also received an email from ACECQA asking us to write an article for their monthly newsletter about how our mini Floriade is helping us to be engaged with our local community even during lockdown. I will share this with you when it is published.
ELC Holiday Program
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the educators who continued to work over the holiday period. The program involved many different activities such as Spring Gardening, Worm Investigations, Mad Science, Nature Play and A Day At The Cinemas, just to name a few.
Term 4 Home Learning
Our ELC classes will continue with SeeSaw as our remote learning platform. A new learning grid was posted to the SeeSaw page for the next few weeks. Please keep uploading photos and videos of what your child has been participating in during remote learning, these will be displayed in your child’s portfolio.
Local Visitors
We have had some local visitors take residence in one of our trees near the carpark this week. Unfortunately, the bees did not choose a safe place to rest and we had to organise for their removal. We were told that there were approx. 6000 bees in one group and 12,000 in another.
Aren't they fascinating?
Check-in CBR
If you are on the ELC grounds, please remember you are required to register on the Check In CBR app and to wear a face mask at all times.
