Dear SJV Families
Welcome to the end of Wk 7.
A Spring Prayer
Spring is a metaphor for change. Some changes we eagerly await, and some we abhor. Some changes we plan and others arrive uninvited. To all these changes we ask the gift of Your perspective beckoning us to expectation, hope, and rebirth.
May the sunlight and the rain be reminders that You are at work renewing the earth. As a God of renewal, You are ever at work in our lives, too.
Open our eyes and lives to the needed changes in our lives this Spring. Awaken us to new life and perspective, for we pray in Jesus’ name.
Celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation
Last week the parish held a beautiful celebration for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our students, Kate, Janae, Sophie, Zoe, Shelby and Maryam displayed reverence and respect, both admirable qualities of the Holy Spirit. We wish the girls all the best for their continuing journey of being catholic.
Fete - Raffle Tickets
Your chance to win a $1000 cash prize starts today! Students should have brought home a book this afternoon and you can start selling straight away. Once you have sold one book and you want to sell more, just bring in the stubs and money and we will issue you with another book to sell. These funds help the community council support our school with student learning and resources.
Book Parade
What an amazing day this was. The children were so excited and happy to show off their fantastic costumes. I would like to thank all the parents and grandparents for attending the parade and supporting the children, making them feel special and highlighting the fact that reading is fun. A big thank you to Mrs Spackman who made the entire week a celebratory occasion with exciting activities for the full five days.
Father's Day
A huge thank you to the wonderful Year 3 parent team that organised our Father's Day last week. We had a very impressive turnout with a full hall of excited children and supportive fathers and Grandfathers, eating good food and making amazing paper air planes. You can see below the competition in full flight as well as our proud winners, the Ford family. A shout-out goes to Bakers Delight who provided all the delicious pastries to make the event a tasty success.
Science Incursion
We had a very educational and funny science incursion last week. Part theatre and part theory, the presenters did a brilliant job in entertaining and educating the children. A big thanks to Mrs Spackman who organised this great opportunity.
Photos to follow.
Chris Steel Visit
Next week we will be receiving a visit from the Minister for Transport Chris Steel. Teachers and students alike will get the opportunity to meet Chris and Chris will get the opportunity to see some of our teachers in action. The SRC will also be given some time to have a sit-down conversation with Chris and I believe they are busy preparing some thoughtful questions for him when he arrives.
Principal's Conference and Leave
The Australian Primary Principals Conference, which I will be attending, begins in Wk 9 on Tuesday. After this event I will be taking some long service leave which means I will not return until Term 4. As always the more than capable Mrs De Rosa will take care of our community whilst I am away.
I wish everyone safe travels for the holiday and a safe return to SJV in Term 4.

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
National Child Protection week 1 - 7 September 2024
In 2024, the National Child Protection Week message that ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’ will be complemented with the theme ‘Every conversation matters’.
Conversations are powerful tools to keep children and young people safe and well.
Conversations can help us understand issues, craft solutions, value community knowledge, and build the brains and social connections of children and young people.
Conversations between
…children and their caregivers matter (from the very earliest days)
…children and their peers matter
…families with teachers, doctors, and other professionals matter
…friends or neighbours matter
…decision-makers and the communities they serve matter.
And, of course, conversations in the public realm and media matter…
So this National Child Protection Week we invite you to speak up – and speak together – about what needs to change for every child in every community to have a fair go.
This theme provides a platform to:
- engage in important conversations,
- promote the value of conversations, and
- equip us to have conversations that keep kids safe.
In Health lessons, held during Library, Mrs Spackman has begun the Healthy Body curriculum with information from the Biggest Child Safety lesson. Children have discussed the importance of feeling safe, enthusiastic consent and have used their hands to identify the safe people they can talk to when they need help (upper grades have been encouraged to let their safe people know they have been chosen and talk to families bout how to contact these people if needed). I encourage you to download the Parent and Carer Guide for more details.
A separate note will go home with more information, links and advice to continue the conversations about child safety and body changes. We acknowledge and understand that conversations about body changes and safety can be challenging, however research suggests children who know the correct names and functions of their body parts from a young age, are less vulnerable to being targeted and more likely to tell an adult if they have been harmed. Open and honest conversations can assist in ensuring 'secrets' are not part of children's safety.
Mrs D’s ‘Thought of the Week….’
"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear".

Prayer for Fathers and Father Figures
God our Father,
in your wisdom and love you made all things.
Bless these men,
that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers.
Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters,
may honour them always
with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Gospel Reflection: Mark 7:31-37
In this Gospel, we see Jesus healing a man who was deaf and had difficulty speaking. By saying Ephphatha, meaning ‘Be opened,’ Jesus restores the man's ability to hear and speak clearly. This powerful miracle shows us how Jesus can open our hearts and minds to better understand and share His love. Just as Jesus healed the man, He invites us to be open to His teachings and to use our gifts to help others.
School Masses
As a school, we regularly attend the Wednesday morning 9:30 am Mass at St John Vianney’s Church. The choir sings at this Mass, and sometimes our students have a role in other parts of the celebration. Parents and friends of our school are welcome to join us alongside parishioners at this Mass. The dates the school will be attending Mass this term and next term are as follows:
Term 3 Week 9 - Wednesday 18th September: Parish Mass, 9:30am (Led by Year 3)
Please note - Merit Awards will be handed out at NEXT Friday's morning assembly.

Congratulations to our Week 5 Merit Award Students
Logan Cairns, Sullivan Donley, Alice Malpas, Sanuthi Karunarathne, Sam Ford, Archer Lucas Andrew Doszpot Kate Battaglini and Harper Topp.
Congratulations to our Semester 2 SRC students.
Kate Battaglini, Hayden Sjoberg, Hanston Joseph, Jassnoor Kaur, Nadia Taflaga, Nate Topp, Sebastian Collins and Lily Battaglini.
The students were captivated by old building tools, cameras, phones, irons, toys, and many other items that have evolved over the past hundred years. They were able to see firsthand how these objects have changed over the years. Students stepped back in time and entered an old classroom. Inspector Cane welcomed them, inspecting the students' fingers, teeth, and shoes before settling in for a lesson with Mrs. Pratt. Armed with slate boards, the students practiced writing their names and solved Maths problems to earn their qualifying certificates. It was a great start to our next History Unit. Thanks Mrs. Cowley for organising.

Thank you to all of our educators for everything you do!
