Dear SJV Community
Welcome to the end of Wk 5
God, help me navigate whatever challenges I encounter this day. Be my comfort and my rock. Guide me to do Your will and be an instrument of your peace today
Year 5/6 Camp
A big thank-you to Mrs Malpas and Mrs Hart for attending Year 5/6 Camp and looking after their classes 24/7. Several schools in the ACT have stopped running camps because of the volunteer time needed from staff. Fortunately the culture at SJV is one of service, and I am very thankful that we have a staff who believe in this creed.
Fire Drill
The school conducted a very successful fire drill on Wednesday. The children followed the procedure perfectly and our systems worked well. There is always fine tuning to be had, so we will continue to look at our plans to make them the best they can be. The next drill we will hold will be to review our Lockdown procedure.
Important Dates are -
NAPLAN Yrs 3 and 5 - 11th March to 18th March
School Disco - Thursday 4th April (details to follow)

Principals Retreat/Conference
Next Tuesday, I will leave school to attend the annual CECG Principals Retreat/Conference. Alongside the the spiritual aspect of the retreat, CECG Office often use this as a platform to release new information concerning strategic planning and innovative pedagogy. It is also a great opportunity for me to network with other Principal's. Mrs De Rosa will ensure the smooth running of the school until I return.
Reading the Newsletter
Not everyone is opening their newsletter (yes we get this feedback through the app, with specific names) which means that you are not always receiving necessary communication. Please make sure that you look at this document at least once every two weeks. A COMPASS message will be sent out advising all families of this news piece.
Class Contacts
We need contacts for Year 1, Year 3, Year 4 and both Year 5/6 classes. Please send an email in and volunteer for this class position. If you have not been in this role before, this is your chance to make a difference. The school will provide you everything you need.
God Bless

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program
Rights and Responsibilities.
All students have certain rights. At St John Vianney’s Primary School, we have our corner stone rules. The children will know them as the the yellow, pink and green rule. The rules form the basis of our School Behaviour Management Policy.
· We all have the right to feel safe (Yellow Rule)
Students cannot learn well or socialise effectively if they feel unsafe in the classroom or playground. Safety at school includes psychological and emotional safety, the right to privacy and personal space as well as a safe and clean physical environment.
· We all have the right to learn (Pink Rule)
Students need to have their efforts recognised, to feel supported when they make mistakes and to receive assistance and encouragement. The teacher needs to be able to focus time and energy into supporting learning. Class developed rules can support a learning culture and environment.
· We all have the right to respect and fair treatment (Green Rule)
Students should be able to express their thoughts, beliefs and feelings without fear of racism, ridicule or bias. All students should feel included and be treated with dignity and respect, even when being disciplined. Such rights can only be enjoyed when people are acting responsibly.
At SJV, we use a 'Token' system to highlight and celebrate with the students when they follow the rules ad are demonstrating high quality behaviour. When staff ‘spies’ them following our school rules they will receive tokens. Students will then be able to redeem these tokens for rewards when they have accumulated a certain amount.
This is the progression of trading for the reward system.
Receive 10 x Yellow Tokens trade for 1x Red Token
Collect 5 x Red Tokens trade for 1 x Blue Token
Collect 3 x Blue Token trade
for 1 x White Token
When students receive a white token they receive a lunch with Mr Rodda with other white token recipients.
Tokens continue to accumulate for a child's time at SJV. There is the potential of receiving more than one token and children in Year 6, as leaders in the school can opt for a 'takeaway' lunch - which tends to be McDonalds.

Gospel Reflection John 2:13-25
In this Sunday’s Gospel, we witness Jesus cleansing the temple in Jerusalem. It's a powerful moment that reveals several important lessons for us and our children. Firstly, Jesus’ actions show us the importance of reverence and respect for sacred spaces. The temple was meant to be a place of prayer and worship, but it had been turned into a marketplace. Jesus teaches us the significance of treating places of worship with reverence, reminding us to approach them with hearts focused on God.
Secondly, Jesus' zeal for the house of God reflects his passion for righteousness and justice. He was not afraid to confront wrongdoing, even in the most revered institutions. This teaches us the value of standing up for what is right, even when it might be challenging or unpopular.
Furthermore, this passage reminds us of the need for inner cleansing. Just as Jesus cleansed the temple, we too must allow him to cleanse our hearts of anything that distracts us from God’s presence. It's a call to self-examination and repentance, inviting us to rid ourselves of anything that hinders our relationship with God. Ultimately, this passage invites us to encounter Jesus in a deeper way – to allow him to cleanse our hearts and lead us into a closer relationship with God. May we as a community strive to live out the lessons found in this passage, guiding our children to grow in faith, reverence, and love for God.
Project Compassion
Ash Wednesday marked the official launch of our Project Compassion fundraising campaign for Caritas Australia. Caritas Australia has worked hand in hand with the most marginalised and remote communities in Australia and overseas to confront the challenges of poverty for over 60 years. The theme for this year’s fundraiser is ‘For All Future Generations.’ Some inspiring stories (suitable for primary school aged children to watch) about people Caritas has assisted, can be found here: https:/youtube/pquSO1uw4Zs?si=sP_aGmnRjL6AdoCM
Each classroom has a Project Compassion donation box which we encourage all students to donate to throughout Lent. In classes, we have talked about how Lent is a time of fasting, prayer and almsgiving , as well as sacrifice. Donating to Project Compassion, even just a small amount, is a great way for children to embrace the spirit of the Lenten season. As part of our fundraising efforts, the school will be holding an Easter Egg Jar Guessing Competition from next week. We will run this during the first break on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout Lent. The cost will be 50 cents per guess. The winners of the competition will be announced at our Easter Sunday Prayer Celebration on Tuesday 2nd April.

Library News Think U Know Presentation
Think U Know
On Tuesday, Year 3-6 participated in a Think U Know workshop (Constable Kenny will work with Kindergarten to Year 2 later in the year).
Think U Know - Education for children and young people
Children and young people receive education directly from influencers in their lives, including parents, carers, teachers and police.
Resources encourage critical thinking and learnings to prevent harm, to identify safe or unsafe situations and know when and how to seek help.
Our in-school presentations are delivered by State and Territory police to build positive engagement between children, young people and police, while equipping students with the knowledge and skills to be able to take actionable steps to maintain their safety at all times.
A link has been added here with parent resources linked to the content received at our workshop on Tuesday. Ask your children what they learnt about during the workshop - these topics will create wonderful discussions for you as a family.
THINK U KNOW - EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
Some of the content the students learnt about was:
Asking before using a device, do your parents know what you're playing? Sharing passwords with parents (not siblings and friends), passwords should not include any personal information about the person, don't give personal information, TALK TO A TRUSTED ADULT IF YOU'RE CONCERNED ABOUT ANYTHING YOU SEE ONLINE, think and check before you post (example given of a photo and the information that could be gathered about the student), the what if's of walking home/ being home by yourself (students encouraged to discuss with trusted adult the possible dangers and what they would do), criminal offence to cyber bully, what to do if they see something negative (block, delete and report), kids helpline ? internet can be great, work together to learn how to use it safely!
Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge
All SJV students have been registered to participate in the 2024 Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge. At school, and at home, students are encouraged to read 30 books by the end of June (this includes books that are read to them/ shared).
Each student from Year 2 to Year 6 has a recording sheet in the library that they are encouraged to fill in to show the 30 books they have read. I will keep a note of the books we read in the library from Kinder to Year 2.
ELC NEWS
Over the past five weeks, the ELC children, staff and families have been forming relationships and establishing a sense of belonging within their new ELC environment. As stated in the Early Years Learning Framework, “Children’s lives are characterised by belonging, being and becoming. From before birth children are connected to family, communities, culture and place. Their earliest learning, development and wellbeing takes place through these relationships, particularly within families, who are children’s first and most influential educators. (p.6)”
The ELC children have been proudly introducing their families to their class through family photos, stories and drawings. This week they explored a special family, Jesus’ family. The Early Years Learning Framework was updated last year. Head to BELONGING, BEING & BECOMING (acecqa.gov.au) for more information. Our teachers and educators have been attending various personal development opportunities to help understand the changes and how to adapt the programs to reflect these changes.
ELC Fruit Shop
Our first ELC Fruit Shop was a huge success and the children were very excited to ‘purchase’ their own fruit. This week’s Mystery Fruit was strawberries, which we grow in our ELC garden, and our resident blue tongue lizard enjoys feasting upon.
With our Library and Arts lessons scheduled early in the morning, it has had an impact on the days we run Fruit Shop. We will now hold Fruit Shop on Tuesdays (odd weeks) and Thursday (even weeks).
St Jude’s Fete
The St Jude’s Fete will be on Saturday 16th March. This is a great fun day to meet other families and raise some funds for the school. This year the ELC will be hosting the hairspray stall. Many hands make light work, so we’d love for you to get involved. More information on how to volunteer will come soon.
Mufti Day
Mufti Day (non-uniform day) is tomorrow 1 March (week 5) for Turtles and Lobsters and Tuesday 5 March (week 6) for Stingrays. The aim is to collect supplies and donations for our fete stall. Children are invited to wear plain clothes and we ask that you donate a can of coloured hairspray and a gold coin.
Clean Up Australia day (for schools)
Can you imagine the good we can do if all of Australia came together on one day and took practical action to improve the environment? What a difference we could make! This Friday, 1 March, St Jude’s Primary and ELC will participate in Clean up Australia Day for Schools. We will join with our buddy groups and collect rubbish from our school and the surrounding environment. All classes will discuss safe practices for rubbish collection. We encourage students to bring in gloves from home. Afterwards, we will dispose of the waste collected and wash hands. School Clean Up Day is a great way to inspire students to learn about the impact of rubbish on the local environment while playing an active role in their community.
Project Compassion
During Lent, we are learning about the importance of doing kind things for others. We will participate in Project Compassion, which raises funds to help people living in poverty in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world. ELC families are invited to donate. Project Compassion boxes are located on the prayer table in each classroom.

NAPLAN testing will occur in our school between 13 and 25 March 2024 for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are engaging for students. The tests are tailored (or adaptive), which means that each test presents questions that may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. This helps students remain engaged with the assessment. Tailored testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN result is based on both the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions challenging; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. All Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper. NAPLAN provides valuable information to schools and parents about literacy and numeracy achievement. It supports school improvement processes by enabling teachers to monitor student progress over time and to identify areas of strength and development. All eligible students are encouraged and supported to participate in NAPLAN testing. Visit www.nap.edu.au to see interactive versions of the test and for more information.
