Dear SJV Community
What an amazing week we have just had.
Gracious God, we humbly come before You in prayer today to offer our immense gratitude for the blessing of these selfless volunteers in our lives. We are filled with wonderment at their tireless dedication and benevolence.
May Your Spirit bless them with continual guidance as they faithfully serve others. We beseech You to bestow upon them resilience, daring, and fortitude. Let joy, peace, and satisfaction be upon the good work that they do.
Inspire and motivate them to persist through trying circumstances, steadfast in their dedication to aiding those around them. We are deeply grateful for these volunteers, whose shining radiance reflects the profound beauty and compassion of Your love.
In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen

Raffle
A big thank you also to Mrs Sjoberg, Hayden, Mrs Taflaga, Dimitri, Mrs Doszpot, Andrew and Harry - a real family event!! sales of raffle tickets were incredible, amazing and awesome at Cooleman Court on the weekend in just less than 1 hour. We would like to continue this initiative for the next 5 weeks, but we need a coordinator who can tell people what they need to do and how they go about it. If the coordinator knows some people who would like to donate 60min of their time, that would be an advantage.
FAMILY INCENTIVES
● The family who returns the most sold tickets will receive a $50 My Sweet Lady gift voucher (one of the amazing parents at our school, Ash, makes seriously delicious cakes and has donated this prize).
● Weekly draw to win 1 x canteen voucher for fully sold books returned in that week (from weeks 1-7 in Term 4) Drawn each Friday at the morning school assembly.
● The family who sells each winning ticket will receive a $50.00 cash prize.
● As part of our Final prize to families for returning sold ticket books, we have a double pass to give away to attend Dr Seuss's the Cat in the Hat Live on Stage at Canberra Theatre during the summer school holidays. Drawn Friday 1st December.
Happy Selling!!!
God Bless

Prayer for Remembrance Day
Thank you to our Year 5 students for leading their class groups in a Remembrance Day Prayer Celebration yesterday during Heart Space time. The theme of the prayer celebration was ‘let peace begin with me.’ Year 5 taught our students about how to be people of peace. Together we prayed for peace in our world and remembered the lives lost to war. One of the prayers we prayed yesterday was the Prayer of St Francis, which I’d like to share with you this week, as we all pray for an end to conflict throughout our world.
Prayer of St Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
Sacraments 2024
Students who are eligible to make one of the Sacraments (Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation) next year have received a formal invitation from the Parish to be part of the Sacramental program for 2024. These invitations were sent home with students last term. We encourage you to read the information (on the back of the invitation) and visit the Parish's website for more information. The Parish website is: https:/stjvwestoncreekblogspot.com/
If your child has not received an invitation and you would like them to receive one of the Sacraments, or if your child has received an invitation for the wrong Sacrament, please let me know via email: laura.matchett@cg.catholic.edu.au
Eligibility for each Sacrament is as follows:
Reconciliation - open to students who have been baptised Catholic and who are in Year 3 or above.
First Eucharist - open to baptised Catholic students who have made their Reconciliation and are in Year 4 or above.
Confirmation - open to baptised Catholic students who have received their First Eucharist and who are in Year 6 or above.
It is possible to receive more than one Sacrament in the same year, however, the Sacraments usually need to made in order (i.e. Reconciliation, followed by First Eucharist, then Confirmation). These questions and other general enquiries about the Sacramental program are best directed to the Parish Office via email: SacramentalOLA@cgorgg.au
Updates and information about the Sacramental program will be published in the school newsletter and Parish bulletin throughout the year.
We encourage families of candidates completing a Sacrament next year to attend one of the Parish Masses this weekend for the official launch of the 2024 Sacramental program.

2023 SJV Fete - Best Day Ever!
WOW! What an amazing day we had on Saturday. Everyone I’ve spoken to has raved about the great day they had, which could not have been possible without all the amazing volunteers who helped out before, on and after the day. If you didn't volunteer this year why not chat to someone who did about their experience and please (please!) consider putting your hand up next year, we can't run such awesome events without volunteers. Hearing from your kids about how much they loved the day makes your (small or large) volunteer time worthwhile.
Of course this year’s fete could not have been possible without the Fete Committee members putting many, many, many hours into organizing our major fundraiser AND an amazing community day. If you see one of the Fete Committee members around make sure you congratulate them on creating such a memorable day - Janice Spackman, Tessa Goundar, Ash Donley, Sammy Russell, Penny Bufalo, Kylie Sjoberg, Anita Wilkinson, Matt Thorpe, Pete Seivers and Emma Robinson.
Our Mega Cash Raffle forms part of our fete takings and will be drawn on 1 December. We’ll be able to announce the final fete takings once all expenses have been paid and all cash raffle tickets and money has been returned.

- Stump Grinding - Taking down a tree without removing its stump may cause a range of issues like rotting, reshooting, termites, ants, and other pests. It could also get in the way of your landscaping and paving plans, or worse, it can be a hazard and trip someone walking past.
- Deadwood Removal - When deadwood breaks off the heartwood of the tree is exposed and can be left vulnerable to unwanted fungus, insects, and other forms of decay. This can also be a significant safety issue if deadwood is left on a tree, Dead branches will weaken and degrade, eventually detaching and falling from the tree especially in high winds or storms. It’s important to remove Deadwood to prevent potential harm to people or structures.
- Tree Pruning Services - Most trees benefit from the professional removal of branches. It can encourage new growth, increase the amount of sunlight that reaches your garden or house and improve the health of the trees. ProArb can trim and reshape healthy trees increasing chances of growth, visibility, and accessibility. This can include Crown Reduction, Canopy Lifting and Canopy Thinning.
- Bees - Pro Arb can remove a problem bee swarm or hive from up a tree using the latest technology and equipment to make it safe for your family.

NRMA Science and Road Safety Program
Last week the NRMA Science and Road Safety program worked with each year level to teach and remind students of what they can do to stay safe when crossing roads, riding bikes, scooters and skate boards and how to stay safe as a passenger in the car.
Recommendations have changed recently for when a child should move from booster seats and sit in the front seat. The NRMA program discussed all of these important changes with the students. As it’s important for us to also educate our community, here is a few points NRMA has asked us to share.
Safe travels always!!
- By law, all children under the age of 7 must use a booster seat. A booster seat allows children to sit taller in the seat so that the adult seatbelt doesn’t rest across their neck which is very dangerous in a crash.
- Did you know that for maximum protection, your child’s seatbelt must sit on their collarbone and across their hip bones? If your child is constantly slipping their seatbelt under their arm so that it rests against their ribs, then they may still need a booster seat. We need to keep the seatbelt away from the rib cage as it is not strong enough to withstand the forces generated in a crash.
- The front seats of cars are potentially dangerous places for children. Airbags deploy at 300km/hr and they are designed to hit an adult at chest height. For any child under the height of 150cm it will hit around head height. Australia growth charts show that less than half of children reach 150cm by the age of 12, so delay your child’s move into the front seat for as long as possible.
- For a bike helmet to do its job, it must stay on your child’s head in a crash and the best way to do this is to adjust the straps to ensure there is no more than a two finger space above the eyebrows and between the chin and strap. Remember to remove their hats and for girls avoid wearing high pony tails to ensure the helmet stays in place.
- Never slash or cut the inside foam of a bike helmet as this is the part that absorbs all the force that would be transferred to the head in a crash. If your child has a crash and their helmet hits the ground, you will need to replace the helmet even if it still looks okay. This is because the all-important inner foam has been compressed and it is now too hard to absorb the force of another crash.
- Make sure your child’s bike is the right size bike so they can always be in control – are the balls of the feet able to reach the ground when they are seated on the bike? If not, you will need to lower the seat. Make sure that the brakes, gears and bell are in easy reach when riding.
To ensure correct payment is received, families are asked to order and pay for Book Club using the on-line LOOP platform.
Happy reading
Happy Birthday Rupert W
It was wonderful to welcome the 2024 preschool children to the ELC today for their Orientation Day. Our current preschoolers were so excited to go to their Kinder Orientation Days at St Jude’s (and SJV last week). It’s wonderful to see how much they have progressed this year and how ready they are for primary school.
The 2024 St Judes kinder children received a take home pack which included a shirt in their house colour. If the shirt is not the correct size and you need to exchange it, please take it to the primary school front office to swap.
This week we have been super busy with our buddies from St Jude’s AND St John Vianney, we are so lucky to be able to spend time with our school leaders. On Tuesday we participated in the St Jude’s Cup, creating hobby horses in the morning followed by a race in the afternoon. Today our SJV buddies helped us decorate kites, the rain came and spoiled our plans to fly them. We will continue this activity on our next visit. Because of the unexpected rain, we were able to have an indoor picnic for morning tea and watched a video about the frog life cycle.
ELC Resource Fee Refund
Following government funding, Catholic Education is able to provide financial assistant to families supporting the delivery of our 2023 Terms 3 and 4 Preschool Program. You will receive a refund of the $85 resource fee paid for Terms 3 and Term 4 in your next statement.
Mango Update
Thank you for supporting our Mango Fundraiser again this year. According to the farmers, this year’s mango crop has been full of surprises. At this stage it looks like our mangos will be delivered in the week of 20 November (week 7) which is earlier than expected. We will keep you informed if this changes.
Walkathon
Thank you for supporting our annual Walkathon. If you have not already sent in your sponsorship money, you can still deposit it through Qkr. All money is due by Tuesday 14th November. The lucky ticket prizes will be drawn Wednesday 22nd November.
