Dear SJV Families,
With Remembrance Day coming this Friday I recall a passage from a book I once read. “The Spirit of the Digger, Then and Now” by Patrick Lindsay explores what it is that sets Australian soldiers apart.
General Peter Cosgrove is an admired Australian who himself reflects the traits we admire in the Digger – courage, leadership, initiative, and compassion. In the above mentioned book, he is quoted as saying:
“I think we carry our national characteristics with us, we don’t subordinate any important element of the Australian character in the making and the life of a Digger. For example, we still very much have a sense of social justice which applies not just internally to the army but in our dealings with other people. So I would be amazed if Australian soldiers seeing people of other nations suffering hardship, which they do if they go to an area of operations, they will see people who are down and out, if this doesn’t strike a tremendous chord in the Digger’s heart”
On Friday we will pray in thanksgiving for the service and sacrifice of all who have worn an Australian uniform with pride and dedication. We will of course, also, pray for peace; for we know of the strife in many areas of our world today.
Lest we forget
Fete
Thank you all for an amazing family and community Fete!
It was a terrific effort by the organisers, the Community Council, staff and volunteers to prepare for the Fete. They worked effectively to ensure everything was organised, booked, delivered, set up, coordinated etc. I would like to thank in particular, Lucy Ohlmus, Matt Thorpe, The Doszpot Family, Janice Spackman, Nina De Rosa, The 2022 Fete Committee and Jet Simpson. Many hours went into planning and ensuring all was ready for last Saturday.
Thank you to those parents, friends and community members who volunteered to help on stalls. Without your help we would not have been able to have as many stalls as we did. On a beautiful Spring day, the Fete was well-attended and most stalls traded well.
Thank you also to our amazing SJV staff who were involved in everything! Staff were seen assisting with many tasks in and out of school time, setting up, working on various stalls, assisting students and visitors and packing up... among many things.
Whilst the final amount on the day is still to be finalised, it is anticipated the profit will be similar to previous years. However, more important is the fact that we held a great family event for our families and local community. Thank you to the whole community for supporting the SJV Fete again!
Well done!
Fete Sponsors
The following sponsors helped make our Fete a success. Please consider supporting them in return. Thank you to: Luton Weston Creek, Cross Fit Woden, Wild Studio, Shiny Nails, Fit Bodz, Capital Chemist, Bakers Delight, Deanne Calisthenics, That Gelato Place, Hide Away Cafe, Woolworths, XD Hair Rivett, J & R Bakery, Deserved Luxury, The Doszpot Family, Raiders Weston and Brindabella Waste.

Our annual Raffle was launched at the Fete on the weekend. It will be drawn on 13th December, which would make it a great Christmas present for whoever wins. (It might be you.)
Every family is encouraged to sell a book of tickets, which will be sent home this week.
IEU Industrial Action
Please note that I have received information concerning planned protected industrial action by the Independent Education Union (‘IEU’). I have been informed that some Independent Education Union (IEU) members from St John Vianney’s will be participating in one hour of protected industrial action in the form of a work stoppage.
The IEU has advised that the work stoppage will occur on Tuesday 15 November 2022 between 8.30am – 9.30am. As a result of this action, our school may experience staff shortages during this time. It may be necessary to ask that your children attend school at a later time next Tuesday.
By tomorrow (Friday 11 November), I will advise you about the specific arrangements for our school. These arrangements may include changes to the learning program or consideration of whether only supervision can be provided between the hours of 8.30 – 9.30.
Welcome – Kindergarten Orientation
Next Wednesday (16th November) we welcome our 2023 Kindergarten students and their families to our school. We hope they soon feel very much a part of the SJV community.
Staffing
Following our news that Mrs Emerson will be on leave next year, I take pleasure in announcing the following new staff to SJV for 2023:
Mrs Nicole Perryman (teacher), Mrs Liz Diskin (teacher) and Mr Jess Gibson (classroom support assistant).
Kindness Day and Colour Run
We are excitedly looking forward to a special (uniform free) day on Friday 18th November. Please keep your eyes out for further details.
Last Day of Term Four / Staff Development Day
Please remember that Catholic Education is allocating one (1) staff development day for all ACT systemic Catholic schools on the last day of Term 4 being Friday 16 December. Please note, therefore, that the last day of school for SJV students this year is Thursday 15 December.
Children’s Safety…
We have heard recently on the ACT Policing FB page (https://www.facebook.com/ACTPolicing) about an incident with a 13 year old girl in Rivett.
If your child walks or rides without adult accompaniment, please emphasise with them the importance of:
- Travelling in pairs of groups
- Staying visible to houses and busy roads
- Walking on footpaths (not roads)
- Never accepting a ride from unknown people
- Ensuring parents know which route they are taking.
It was once said…
“We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.” – William Gladstow.
Blessings to you and your family.

SJV KINDNESS DAY AND COLOUR CELEBRATION
FRIDAY 18Th NOVEMBER
Nationally Kindness Day is held on 13th November. SJV launched their commitment to Kindness Week during Children’s Week 2022. We pledged our commitment to fill our school and community with Kindness. Students have completed learning tasks that have reinforced what it means to act kindly, what it looks like and how it feels to be kind and to receive kindness.
The plan for the day is as follows:
- Children arrive to school in old, coloured clothing (appropriate closed shoes, old clothes that may be stained with colour run powder)
- SJV community will spread kindness in our community by laying their kindness rocks in the local area (Classes will walk around our local area and leave ‘kindness rocks’ for community members to find. Classes will return to complete kindness activities
- Recess as normal
- Following Recess, children will spend time participating in the variety of activities, which Year 6 have organised as part of Side Show Alley. Children will require silver coins to participate, and funds collected will be forwarded to Catholic Missions. All activities will cost between 10c to a maximum of 30c.
- Just before lunch we will hold a kindness raffle draw. Three children will be rewarded with a ‘kindness plush Bigfoot’, acknowledging their commitment to treating others with kindness.
- Lunch as normal –Optional ‘Kindness’ lunch- ordered through the canteen.
- At approximately 2.45pm until the end of the day children will move onto the oval area and be covered with coloured powder (corn-starch and food colouring), to celebrate the happiness of spreading kindness. The colour we will be using is the Colour Run powder from the Walkathon. Children can wear a white or light coloured T-shirt over their ‘coloured clothes’, to enhance the appearance of colour. Past year’s walkathon shirts could be an option, or an adult’s old t-shirt. Kindergarten children could use their orientation t-shirt.
- You may like to provide a change of clothes or provide a towel to avoid staining car seats. The powder is made with corn-starch and food colouring, it is non-toxic however could stain clothing and furniture. You may wish to supply your child with wet wipes to remove excess powder from arms and legs.
- The day will end with children enjoying being covered by colour, running, and playing around the school grounds.
- If the weather is unkind, we will make the necessary changes.
WHAT DO CHILDREN NEED?
- Coloured clothing that can be covered with coloured powder, alternatively an old T-shirt to wear over plain clothes.
- Recess/lunch as normal including a drink bottle and hat. Details of optional Kindness special lunch to follow
- Enough silver coins to participate in Sideshow Alley activities for the afternoon session. eg $2 - $5
- Change of clothes, if necessary, wet wipes or towel for stain protection.
Parents and extended family are welcome to join us for any part of the day.
"Kindness is a gift everyone can affort to give."

Gospel Reflection Luke 21:5-19
When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.’
This week’s Gospel asks to reflect on what we value, who we listen to and what we believe to be important. This passage tells us that the people in the story were admiring a beautiful temple, and Jesus reminded them that the time would come when it would no longer exist. What are the ‘temples’ in our lives? Our houses? Our possessions? Our bodies? Jesus reminds us that when we focus on the splendour and beauty of these things, it can distract us from God and the promise of an eternal life with Him. As the liturgical year draws to a close and we begin preparations for Advent, closely followed by the business and distractions of the Christmas season, this Gospel serves as a reminder to keep our hearts and minds focused on what is truly important.
World Mission Month
To celebrate World Mission Month, St John Vianney has a long-standing traditional fundraiser called Side Show Alley. For families who are new to our school, our Year 6 students organise an afternoon of carnival-like games and activities for students in K-5. The activities cost between 20 cents and $1 to participate in, and the money raised goes to support the work of Catholic Mission. The event will be held on Friday November 18th (Week 6). In the meantime, we ask that you try and set aside some loose change/coins to send in with your child on the day so they can join in on the fun!
St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal
St John Vianney’s will once again be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. The last two years have been a challenge for everyone, especially those experiencing disadvantage.
This year has come with new trials including the impacts of closed borders, global inflation, and the east coast energy crisis, putting pressure on people in Australia and adding stress for people already experiencing hardship. We are asking for donations of non-perishable food which we will give to our local Vinnies volunteers to make hampers for those in need. Food items that can be donated are listed below, and are welcome to be dropped into the front office. The last day to drop off donations is Friday, December 2nd. We thank you for your support of this worthy cause.
Parish Mass
We will be attending one more Parish Mass this term as a school on Wednesday 23rd November (Week 7) at 9:30am. All parishioners are welcome to attend. Another Mass was scheduled for Wednesday 30th November, however, this has been cancelled as Father Michael will be away.
Parish BBQ
The annual Parish BBQ will make a welcome return this year. The event will be held in the hall at St John Vianney’s on Friday 2nd December, at 6:30pm. The Parish will be hosting the event and will provide food and drinks for everyone to enjoy. All parishioners are welcome to come along. We hope to see many of our families there.
Sacraments 2023
The Parish is currently reviewing the Sacramental program for 2023 and is appreciative of the feedback received from parents during this first year of the pilot program. Dates for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation will be finalised shortly. If you would like your child to receive any of the Sacraments next year, please keep an eye on the school newsletter and Parish bulletin for the dates. See the information below to determine if your child is eligible to make one of the Sacraments in 2023.

Best day ever @ the SJV fete!
This year for something different - instead of the raffle being drawn on Fete day the decision to launch the Raffle on Fete Day was born - there is so much going on to organise the Fete that selling raffle tickets is the last thing anyone is thinking about, so to try something different and give families extra time to sell as many Raffle tickets as they can and being so close to Christmas - who wouldn't want an extra $1000 or 2nd prize of $500 to spend !!!
Mega cash raffle: This is the major source of fundraising for the school and every ticket sale counts! Our Raffle was launched at the fete last Saturday. Yesterday, Raffle books were sent home with the children. If you would like more books, please contact Jet in the Front Office. The Raffle will be drawn Tuesday 13th December at 2pm. It would be fantastic if every family could sell at least one book. To ensure all sold tickets are entered in the drawer, please return all sold and unsold tickets and payment (cash or Qkr) to the front office.
As we have done pre - covid - we will be asking if there are any families that would like to sit at Cooleman Court to sell the tickets.
Sponsors
Big thanks to our wonderful sponsors!! We appreciate all the support that our sponsors give to us. Please show these businesses your support our Fete would not be the success it is without them. THANK YOU.!

Last Friday we celebrated Grandparents Day. It was lovely to see so many of our grandparents and grand friends back in our ELC. One of our grandads enjoyed the playdough table so much he offered to expand our equipment by creating wooden rollers with different profiles. Thank you to Ian and Brigitte Irvine (Theo’s grandparents) for donating such wonderful hand made rollers for the ELC to enjoy.

SJV Book Fair
Monday 14th November 2022
- A great opportunity to purchase books as Christmas gifts for everyone.
Dear Parents and Families,
Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair next week (Monday 14th – Thursday 17th November)! The Book Fair will be available throughout the week for the students to look at and purchase books. Each student is giving a ‘My Wish List’ sheet where they are able to select a few of their favourite books and share with you.
Our Book Fair Family Events are Tuesday 15th November after school until 4pm, and Wednesday 16th November from 8:30am and after school until 4pm. Parents and Carers are welcome to visit our Book Fair during these times and we would love to see you there!
You and your child will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites.
This is also a great way for you to learn about, and discuss your child's interests and every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.
If students would like to buy a book during the week, they can bring money in an envelope (with their name and class written on the front) and purchase from the Book Fair. EFTPOS will be available at our family events.
Scholastic Book Fairs help us show students the wonder of reading. Thank you for supporting your child, and our school, in encouraging a love of reading. We appreciate your support!
