Gospel Reflection Luke 21:5-19

When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.’

This week’s Gospel asks to reflect on what we value, who we listen to and what we believe to be important. This passage tells us that the people in the story were admiring a beautiful temple, and Jesus reminded them that the time would come when it would no longer exist. What are the ‘temples’ in our lives? Our houses? Our possessions? Our bodies? Jesus reminds us that when we focus on the splendour and beauty of these things, it can distract us from God and the promise of an eternal life with Him. As the liturgical year draws to a close and we begin preparations for Advent, closely followed by the business and distractions of the Christmas season, this Gospel serves as a reminder to keep our hearts and minds focused on what is truly important.

World Mission Month

To celebrate World Mission Month, St John Vianney has a long-standing traditional fundraiser called Side Show Alley. For families who are new to our school, our Year 6 students organise an afternoon of carnival-like games and activities for students in K-5. The activities cost between 20 cents and $1 to participate in, and the money raised goes to support the work of Catholic Mission. The event will be held on Friday November 18th (Week 6). In the meantime, we ask that you try and set aside some loose change/coins to send in with your child on the day so they can join in on the fun!

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

St John Vianney’s will once again be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. The last two years have been a challenge for everyone, especially those experiencing disadvantage.

This year has come with new trials including the impacts of closed borders, global inflation, and the east coast energy crisis, putting pressure on people in Australia and  adding stress for people already experiencing hardship. We are asking for donations of non-perishable food which we will give to our local Vinnies volunteers to make hampers for those in need. Food items that can be donated are listed below, and are welcome to be dropped into the front office. The last day to drop off donations is Friday, December 2nd. We thank you for your support of this worthy cause.

Parish Mass

We will be attending one more Parish Mass this term as a school on Wednesday 23rd November (Week 7) at 9:30am. All parishioners are welcome to attend. Another Mass was scheduled for Wednesday 30th November, however, this has been cancelled as Father Michael will be away.

Parish BBQ

The annual Parish BBQ will make a welcome return this year. The event will be held in the hall at St John Vianney’s on Friday 2nd December, at 6:30pm. The Parish will be hosting the event and will provide food and drinks for everyone to enjoy. All parishioners are welcome to come along. We hope to see many of our families there.
