Dear Parents and Carers
It has been fantastic to see our wonderful students back at school as well as all our parents, albeit, from a distance. I must say I am truly grateful to have almost every child back at school and in their classrooms. St Mother Theresa summed it up when she said – “The best way to show my gratitude to God is to accept everything, even my problems, with joy.” – There have certainly been problems over the last 3 months, but hopefully we are on the way out.
Return to School Procedure Change
Firstly, I would like to thank parents for their limitless patience regarding all the changes in and around school. One area that has been brought to my attention is the afternoon pick-up, which does not appear to be working. Congestion and safety being the biggest issues. Please note the change below.
Afternoon pick up – Parents need to park their car but may now pick their children up from the playground. I would ask parents to keep at least 1.5-2m intervals from other families. If parents would like their children to play on the school equipment (which is now allowed as it is cleaned daily) they must, as before, be near the equipment to make sure their child is supervised. No child should exit the playground without an accompanying parent.
Covid 19 and Social Distancing for Schools
I have included a video link for all parents regarding the best way to keep schools healthy and safe. This video is an interview format with the ACT Chief Medical Officer and her deputy.
Can I ask that parents do not park in the disabled parking area unless they have a recognised disability. We do have parents at our school who need to use this space and it needs to be reserved for their use only.
Reporting to Parents
CE have informed all schools of changes to reporting for Semester One. This term at SJV, students will receive a grade for all assessable subjects, but there will be no comment attached to the report. The student's grade will be informed by all the work completed over the semester. Reports will be available for parents to collect on the last day of Term 2 and Parent/Teacher interviews will occur in Wk 1 of Term 3.
Our enrolment period for the 2021 has already begun. Word of mouth from the community is always one of the strongest forms of recommendation. If you know of a family that is wondering where to send their child, please talk to them about our school and send them down to have a chat with me about their child. If of course you have a sibling who needs to begin next year, could you please complete an enrolment form and submit it asap.
In case some parents are unsure of our current uniform, a separate email will be sent out this afternoon from the Front Office with a full list for your review.
God bless everyone and stay safe
SJV Enroling now for 2021.
For the 2021 enrolment period we will be holding one-on-one virtual tours with our Principal. If you would like a copy of our prospectus, or to book one of these sessions, please visit our enrolment page:
This week each of the Preschool classes have enjoyed watching Mystery Readers via video links. Thank you to all the families who have sent a recording in. The Stingray and Turtle children also appreciated Mystery Readers delivered in person by Mrs Lynch and Mrs L. Throughout the week, children have been identifying people who are special to them, the things that make these people special and memories they have shared together. Handmade cards and gifts have been created for these special people. We hope that all of our mothers and special people have an extra special day on Sunday, Mother’s Day. We congratulate Mrs Foster who taught the ELC children on Wednesdays last term on the arrival of a daughter yesterday, just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day.
The Teddy bears placed around Canberra over the past few months have helped to brighten people’s days when spotted in windows and on walks. As children and staff have been speaking about the teddies they have spotted so we have decided to make a teddy bear trail for the local community. We invite you to take part by bear decorating a bear, writing your name in its foot and an action people can do to strengthen their wellbeing in its tummy. Please return all decorated bears to the envelope on the window of the ELC entrance by Monday 11th May. Information about the trail location will be included in next week’s newsletter.
Please note - Merit Awards will be handed out next Friday at school.
