Welcome to Wk. 5 everyone
Last weekend Fr Simon Falk from my Parish talked about Lent and giving things up.
Often in this modern era, we don’t talk about abstaining but about what we can do for others. Fr Simon countered this with the following – “We can abstain, we can abstain by giving up talking about others. By giving up not caring about the people around us. By giving up thinking ill of others and acting upon our thoughts.
There are many things we can give up to be better people; it just takes a little thought.
Catholic Education Weston Creek/Molonglo Meeting – Wednesday 11th March
The purpose of this meeting is to evaluate, from our parent community, how education can be best served in our region travelling into the future. Staff from both schools have already been consulted and have had input into this process.
If you have the ability to attend this meeting I would very much appreciate your presence as it is vital for the CE’s strategic direction for our school.
Disco
Do not forget that our school disco is on Friday Week 6 the 13th March. It promises to be a glittering affair if the Disco Ball on the flyer is anything to go by. The ELC children have been invited to the first session so come along and boogie with a 4 year old! Tickets are available on Qkr!
School Fees/ Levy rename
Some parents may have noticed that there are different headings for the school levies in their fee statement. You will note that there used to be five levies before and now there are only two. This makes the administration of the levies easier to manage for our front office and there has been no new levies introduced.
Principal’s Retreat/System Direction Day
Currently I am away until Tuesday (Monday is a Holiday). All the principals of the Canberra Goulburn Diocese use this time for spiritual renewal. The CE Leadership Team also use this time to outline to Principal’s the strategic direction that it is taking for the year.
If you need assistance with any issue, please contact Mrs. De Rosa our Assistant Principal.
Working Bee Saturday 14th March
A flyer was sent home with your child today to outline what is occurring at this semester’s working bee. If you sometimes find it difficult to make some of the regular parent events (canteen, discos, fete etc.) then it would be great if you could lend a hand for a couple of hours and then enjoy a free BBQ lunch at 12:00 to finish the day.
SCC Treasurer Needed – repeat request
The SCC is still looking for the office bearer of Treasurer. If you have a skill set in this area, you would be an invaluable person to assist the school. Please consider putting your hand up to be part of a great team of people whose aim is to help provide a great education for all the children of SJV.
Please contact office.sjv@cg.catholic.edu.au
God bless you and your families

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
with Nina De Rosa
It is that time of year again when I would like to gently remind parents about the importance of safe school parking. A majority of families travel to and from school in cars and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that children are kept safe at all times.
- Please only park in marked bays - Do not park against the curbs
- When parked, walk your child/ren into the play area (inside the gate)
- When crossing from the top car park to the school building please use the pedestrian crossings
- If using the drop off zone in the morning you should not get out of the car, the teacher on duty from 8.30am will assist if necessary.
- Drive to the furthest end of the Drop off zone before stopping
- Do not stop on the pedestrian crossing to let children out of the car
- For families with young children the drop off zone can be used as a pick-up area; your child will wait with the teacher on duty in the afternoon and then walk to the area when they see their car
- Please drive slowly – children are unpredictable! Your driving speed should be no more than 5km/h in the car park area.
- When moving to and from your car please be vigilant with supervision
Let’s work together in keeping our children and the SJV community safe and accident free!

Please note - Merit Awards will be handed out at NEXT Friday's morning assembly.

School Wide Positive Behaviours
The Force is strong with this group of former SJV students, taking a break from high school this week for Moderation Day, they were all drawn to their roots.
The ELC children were involved in making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Although the children did not attend the Ash Wednesday school Mass, Mrs Chant, our religious education coordinator visited us at the ELC and explained the Lenten season to the children. The Lobsters and Turtles visited the church together which generated many questions and allowed them to explore and locate symbols. On Friday, the Turtle class participated in ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ with the help of their year 5 buddies.
“Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. Of course, Australia's waste challenges can't be solved in just one day, so over the past three decades, Clean Up Australia has evolved into an organisation that works with community, government and businesses to provide practical solutions to help us all live more sustainably every day of the year. Today our focus is as much on preventing rubbish entering our environment as it is removing what has already accumulated.”
