Welcome to Wk. 3 everyone
After listening to Fr Michael speak at the Sacrament Meeting, around sacramental commitments, it reminded me of a quote from Pope Francis – ‘We cannot be part time Christians! We should seek to live our faith at every moment of every day.’
Father Michael certainly put forward the notion that this is the time to step up and make a commitment to our faith.
Welcome BBQ and School Launch
It was great to see such a large roll up of parents and children to our welcome BBQ. What was wonderful to see were all our families mingling and chatting on our new-grassed area as their children played down on the oval. A great community feel. I thank the SCC who organised our BBQ and made sure that everyone was well fed and happy.
For the families that were unable to attend, our major priorities for the next three years were launched. The three priorities were as follows –
- Improved Student Engagement
- Develop High Expectations &
- Strengthen Well-Being
All our efforts at SJV will be based around these three areas. In future Newsletters I will expand upon these priorities and what they mean for our school.
Working Bee Date Change – Saturday 14th March 9am-12noon – Take Note
Please change your diary entry for the Working Bee Weekend. It has now been changed to avoid the clash with the Long Weekend.
Sacrament Information Night
This was heavily attended by all those families whose child will receive either the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation. Father gave everyone some real insight into what it means to make a commitment to your faith. This is a Parish based sacramental program and Fr Michael is passionate about it providing an opportunity for your children and your family to fully participate in the program and for this to be faith affirming.
Maths Club – Starts Wk. 6 Term 1
Maths Club started last year in Term 4 and will continue this year. This year the club is targeted at Years 3-6. If your child is interested with receiving some extra help or developing their high-level skills even further, then this is the club for you. Please email me (peter.rodda@cg.catholic.edu.au) if you would like your child involved. Numbers will be capped, so places will be offered on a first come first serve basis. The club will begin on Wednesday mornings at 8:30am, after I return from the Principals Retreat.
SCC Treasurer Needed
The SCC is still looking for the office bearer of Treasurer. If you have a skill set in this area, you would be an invaluable person to assist the school. Please consider putting your hand up to be part of a great team of people whose aim is to help provide a great education for all the children of SJV. Please contact office.sjv@cg.catholic.edu.au
School Camp
Year 5/6 are now into their second day of camp as you read this. Mrs De Rosa is running the school in my absence, ably assisted by Mrs Thomas. Keep an eye out on Facebook as you might see some of the team building and challenging activities that the children have been experiencing.
God bless you and your families

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
Rights and Responsibilities.
All students have certain rights. At St John Vianney’s Primary School, we have our corner stone rules. The children will know them as the the yellow, pink and green rule. The rules form the basis of our School Behaviour Management Policy.
· We all have the right to feel safe
Students cannot learn well or socialise effectively if they feel unsafe in the classroom or playground. Safety at school includes psychological and emotional safety, the right to privacy and personal space as well as a safe and clean physical environment.
· We all have the right to learn
Students need to have their efforts recognised, to feel supported when they make mistakes and to receive assistance and encouragement. The teacher needs to be able to focus time and energy into supporting learning. Class developed rules can support a learning culture and environment.
· We all have the right to respect and fair treatment
Students should be able to express their thoughts, beliefs and feelings without fear of racism, ridicule or bias. All students should feel included and be treated with dignity and respect, even when being disciplined. Such rights can only be enjoyed when people are acting responsibly.
All children need to feel that school is a safe place where people will care about them, where their needs for support, respect and friendship will be met, and where they will be able to get help to work out problems. When these needs are met children develop a sense of belonging at school. Belonging is very important for children’s mental health and well being. Children who feel that they belong at school are happier; more relaxed and have fewer behavioural problems than other students. They are also more motivated to learn and be more successful with their school work.
More information about Belonging and student well-being can be found: https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/primary/mental-health-information/need-belong/belonging-school-makes-difference.

The idea of waiting and preparing for an important event is not new; there are many stories throughout the Bible that show people waiting. Moses waited forty days and nights before receiving the 10 commandments, The Israelites wandered the desert for 40 years, and Jesus himself spend 40 days and nights in the desert preparing himself to take on God’s work. 'Forty' is an important number in the Bible. Therefore it is no surprise that Lent lasts for forty days. This is an important number. It stands for a special time of preparation before meeting God.
Lent is the forty-day period of time when we prepare for the most important feast in the Catholic Church- Easter. We do this by renewing the promises made at Baptism. We reject sin. We repent. We proclaim our faith in God. We especially remember Jesus' teachings and his sufferings and death on the cross. We remember Jesus' great love for us in laying down his life for us. By his cross and resurrection Jesus has set us free from sin and death to live forever with God.
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with the Easter Vigil on the night before Easter Sunday.
Next Wednesday, the 26th of February we will be celebrating Ash Wednesday Mass at 9:30am. The school office will be closed during Mass so all staff have the opportunity to celebrate the beginning of Lent. All families are invited to attend Mass and more than welcome to sit with their children as a family unit.
SACRAMENTS
Thank you to all the families who attended the information evening for all three Sacraments (Reconciliation- Year 3, Eucharist - Year 4 and Confirmation - Year 6) on Tuesday evening in the SJV Church.
This year the preparation for the Sacraments will be a little different with all children attending a compulsory retreat experience in order to help make their decision to receive the Sacrament. The retreat experience for Reconciliation and Eucharist starts at 9am and finishes at 11am next Thursday 27 Feb at St Jude's. The children will need to be dropped off at St Jude's to meet their class teachers from 8:30am and we will walk back to school at its conclusion. A separate note will be coming home tomorrow with further details.
Then after the commitment masses on the 15th and 16th of March, father will hold 3 compulsory formation evenings for both adults and children. The dates of these evenings have been advertised in the newsletter since late last year and again early this year as well as appearing on our school calendar.
Confirmation candidates will receive information early next term.
Students still need to be registered on QkR! which is now open. If you have any further queries about the Sacraments please do not hesitate to contact me or Father.
Have a great week.
Please note - Merit Awards will be handed out at NEXT Friday's morning assembly.

School Wide Positive Behaviours
Hi Everyone,
My name is Elena Catanzariti and it’s a joy to introduce myself as the new youth minister at Saint John Vianney’s for 2020! Since finishing my Faith and Community leadership role at Saint Clare’s College, I have begun my tertiary studies at the university of Canberra, studying a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, as well as my first year of ministry with CSYMA! Following on from the amazing work of Theresa Corson, I intend to continue all of the exciting initiatives at the school and begin to empower the SJV community in living out their Catholic faith in their day-to-day lives. This year, I hope to grow with the students along their personal faith journeys through whole school Masses and liturgies, Junior Youth Ministry team initiatives, and classroom ministry visits. Throughout my first few weeks at SJV, I have already begun to witness the warmth and closeness of this community and I am so excited to be a part of the wonderful family here in Warramanga!
I look forward to meeting you all at community events and upcoming Sacramental Masses throughout the year!
Keep an eye out for upcoming faith events this term:
- Journey with Jesus Retreat (5/6) – 19th March
- Southside Summit Youth Rally (Year 6) - 18th April
Please feel free to contact me on my email elena.catanzariti@cg.org.au

Welcome to Scholastic Book Club for 2020!
Last week Scholastic Book Club Issue 1 was sent home and orders are now open, closing on Wednesday 26 February 2020 (week 4).
The easiest and preferred way for families to order and pay for Book Club is to use the online LOOP platform. This will ensure that students get their orders, which are delivered to school for free, and that the correct payment is received.
Please use the link to register and start your order www.scholastic.com.au/loop
LOOP is also available as an app, for both apple and Android devices.
For cash payments, please ensure you have the correct money and that the envelope is securely sealed with your completed order form. This makes it a lot smoother to process all orders and ensures the order can be submitted to Scholastic in a timely manner.
All Book Club orders earn Scholastic rewards for SJV which are redeemed for new resources for our students. Thank you in advance for your ongoing support. Any queries, please contact:

Thank you to our 2019 community for supporting our Tea towel fundraiser, which went towards purchasing vests for the children to wear when they are out in the community. A special thank you to the De Luca family for personalising the vests.
Over the past three weeks, we have been focusing on getting to know each other and ourselves. The Seahorses (before and after school care programs) have displayed interviews “all about me” and height streamers throughout our corridor.
We value the information you have shared with your child’s teacher during Parent Sharing Meetings. This information helps to guide the programs. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have not yet allocated a time to meet.

The tuckshop is in desperate need of some volunteers, in particular on Friday's for this term.
