School Wide Positive Behaviours
The second meeting of the SJV Community Council for 2024 focussed on school events, fundraising objectives and, particularly, the school fete.
2024 SJV Fete
The Fete takes a huge whole community effort to organise. Preparations for this year's fete will need to start imminently, and we currently don't have a fete co-ordinator. If you are interested in being the 2024 fete co-ordinator, please get in touch.
Otherwise, the Council has been considering moving to holding a large fete (like last year’s) every second year to reduce the burden on the school's volunteer community. This means that the next school fete will be in 2025. This alternates nicely with other school events, such as the school production, and allows the community a longer time to organise the fete. If we haven't got a 2024 fete co-ordinator by 5 April 2024, then the Council will put forward its proposal for biennial fetes. Please contact the Council directly on sjv.parent@gmail.com if you have any comments.
Other News
In addition to finalising a decision on the fete, the immediate priorities of the Council are:
- Finalising a forward multi-year plan that will include an investment framework to guide both our fundraising and expenditure priorities, and major event schedule
- Having successfully secured a $10,000 Block Grant from the ACT Block Grant Authority Inc, building a new community focussed Indigenous garden and purchasing a coffee machine to support school events and opportunities for families to come together at low/no cost
- Working through the transition to the new Community Council structure required by the Catholic Education office, including appointing a treasurer, communications officer and an events and fundraising coordinator (with a separate role for a fete coordinator).
As always, if you are interested in volunteering for, or want more information about the School Community Council, please don't hesitate to contact Peter Rodda or the Community Council at sjv.parent@gmail.com

ELC NEWS
Happy Birthday Henry C and Sophie H
We had a great day at the St Jude’s athletics carnival today. We enjoyed lots of games and activities and ended the day with a big race. Thank you to those parents who were able to come along to help. Have you noticed our TV display screen is up and running in the ELC foyer with lots of happy ELC faces?
Fete Thank You!
A big thank you to everyone who contributed and helped to make the St Jude's fete great! It was a wonderful community day and raised significant funds for our school.
St John Vianney’s Open Day
Enrolments are now open for 2025. SJV Open Day dates are Wednesday 1 May from 9:30am to 5pm and Saturday 4 May from 10am to 12noon. SJV welcomes all families to have a tour of the school every Wednesday in the month of May (10:30am to 5:00pm). The ELC will be open on Wednesday 8 May 9:15am to 11am and 3pm – 6pm. If you know of any local families with children approaching preschool/school age, encourage them to come along and have a look.
Mystery Reader
The children are very excited that the Mystery Reader program is now up and running. Parents, grandparents or other family members are invited to sign up on the timetables located on the classroom doors. Bring a favourite book from home to read to the class. The Mystery Reader time is set for 2:45pm but if you would prefer a different time please organise with the classroom teacher.
Lids4Kids
The ELC will be a collecting plastic lids from milk bottles and yoghurt pouches so please drop in your lids for recycling. You can either sort the lids into the collection netting or drop them off and the students will sort them.

Class Parents 2024
The year again has started busy with many events already planned - Senior Camp, the school Swimming Carnival and Parent Information Night and Welcome BBQ, just to name a few. These events are often easier and are more enjoyable with parent involvement. Therefore, we are searching for 2024 class contact for each class at SJV. Thank you to Sonia Taflaga and Kylie Lloyd who have taken on the class parent contact role for Year 2 and Year 4 respectively.
Please consider undertaking this role either on your own or with another class parent. It does not require much time and it helps bring people together and build our SJV community. Please fill in the form below and return to school if you are interested, or email your details to peter.rodda@cg.catholic.edu.au
Roles of a class contact may include all or some of the items listed below:
- Collate and distribute a contact list of parents and students in their child’s class (if they chose to participate), this often helps with organising children’s parties, sporting teams and play dates. Eg – facebook and What’s app groups.
- Organise class gatherings – this could be with or without children (this is a great way to socialise and usually occurs a couple of times a year but of course could be less or more)
- If required help SJV focus groups find class organisers and\or participants for events and fundraisers.
- Be a point of contact for any parent and families new to the school or class queries.
Thanks for taking the time to consider building our community.
Peter Rodda
