Dear SJV Community
Welcome to the end of Wk 7
Staffing Announcements for 2024
It is with a very heavy heart that I have accepted Mr Ben Lowe's resignation from SJV. Ben has been a mainstay at SJV for the last 12 years and has decided that now is a good time to move on. His departure will be felt by all staff, whether it be in the ICT role, as a relief teacher or as a very friendly staff member who is always willing to go the extra mile to make sure the job gets done.
Ben has taken our ICT program to new levels, with the introduction of coding in Scratch, Scratch Jr and Python as well as introducing exciting work such as programmable robots and ‘green screen’ film-making. These are just a few innovations he has brought to the ICT program, none of them touching on his role as head troubleshooter extraordinaire. For all the reasons mentioned and many that were not, Ben will be sorely missed, but I know you will join with me to wish him all the best for his new school and his ongoing career.
We also farewell Miss Ruth Blackwell. We have had the pleasure of her sharing many stories about her cat, her bright and cheerful attire and her passion for renovating. Ruth has accepted a contract in one of our other system schools. We thank her for her time at SJV and wish her all the very best for her future career.
Finally we say goodbye to Mr Jess Gibson who is part of our Learning Support Team. Jess is almost finished his teaching degree and will be taking on relief days at differing schools to further develop his pedagogical skill set. Thank you, Jess for your dedicated work and sense of fun.
I take this opportunity to announce that Mr Wayne Young is taking on the role as ICT Coordinator as well as his classroom teacher role. This will mean that for a day and a half a week, Mrs Mandy Cowley will be joining our school in 2024. Mandy is an experienced teacher in our system and will be an asset for our school.
Mrs Diskin will continue to be at SJV in 2024 as Religious Education Coordinator Relief and Mrs Spackman will continue in the Library but also provide Early Career Teacher Relief. We will also welcome back Mrs Sarah Emerson, returning from maternity leave, on a part time basis.
As was announced in a Compass message last term we welcome aboard Ms Anna Mihalyka and Ms Olivia Hart who will also join our teaching staff in 2024.
School Fees 2024
Detailed information has been given to school concerning next year’s Tuition Fees. The school will send a letter out to all parents next week that outlines the School Based Fees and CE Tuition Fees for 2024 to enable families to plan for next year.
Important dates
The wonderful Mrs Simpson has sent out an Important Dates/Housekeeping note via Compass, in the Newsletter and a hard copy. Please pin it to your fridge so you can stay informed.
Swimming - Wk 10
Thank you to the majority of families who have returned their swimming notes and paid for classes in Wk 10. Just a gentle reminder that if you have not done this yet, to do so ASAP.
God Bless

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
Reports will be sent home in a few weeks. It is important to remember that a school report is not the definitive measure of your child’s abilities. It is only one measure amid a wide range of opportunities, experiences and activities. Setting a pattern of constructive support should help make report time a productive and positive experience that will help your child make progress at school. A few tips:
- Find the positive aspects of the report and praise your child;
- Take into consideration that the A-E grading scale is very different to the one you would have experienced;
- Discuss what your child found difficult. Look at work habits, routines, diet, sleep patterns, etc; and
- Discuss how things could be improved. Offer some constructive/criticism and attainable goals for next year.
Special thanks to the teachers for the many hours of work, outside school time, that go into marking assessments, preparing, editing and finalising the written reports.

Gospel Reflection Matthew 25:31-46
“I tell you solemnly, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me.”
This Sunday marks the Feast of Christ the King, which is celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year. It holds great importance in the Catholic Church and serves as a powerful reminder of Christ's sovereignty and lordship over all creation. This feast was established by Pope Piuss XI in 1925 in response to the challenges and uncertainties of the time. Our Heart Space leaders broke open the key message of this week’s Gospel for our students, that our God is a God of love and mercy and He wants us to be as loving and merciful to all, just as we would be to Him. As we teach our children about the Feast of Christ the King, we aim to instil in them a deep understanding of Jesus as the King of Love and Mercy. This feast invites us to reflect on the profound truth that Christ's reign is not one of dominance or earthly power, but rather a reign of love, compassion, and justice.
Vinnies Christmas Appeal
Tomorrow will be the official launch of our Vinnies Christmas Appeal. We will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for the Vinnies volunteers to make into hampers for those in need. Items can be brought into school on Friday 1st December, however, donations are welcome to be dropped into the Christmas tree in our front office area before that date. With so many families in need of help, we ask that you give what you can. Please see the list below for items that can be donated.Vinnies have requested that all food items have an expiration date that is at least two months away.
Sacraments 2024
Students who are eligible to make one of the Sacraments (Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation) next year have received a formal invitation from the Parish to be part of the Sacramental program for 2024. These invitations were sent home with students last term. We encourage you to read the information (on the back of the invitation) and visit the Parish's website for more information. The Parish website is: https:stjvwestoncreek.blogspot.com/
If your child has not received an invitation and you would like them to receive one of the Sacraments, or if your child has received an invitation for the wrong Sacrament, please let me know via email: laura.matchett@cg.catholic.edu.au
Eligibility for each Sacrament is as follows:
Reconciliation - open to students who have been baptised Catholic and who are in Year 3 or above.
First Eucharist - open to baptised Catholic students who have made their Reconciliation and are in Year 4 or above.
Confirmation - open to baptised Catholic students who have received their First Eucharist and who are in Year 6 or above.
It is possible to receive more than one Sacrament in the same year, however, the Sacraments usually need to made in order (i.e. Reconciliation, followed by First Eucharist, then Confirmation). These questions and other general enquiries about the Sacramental program are best directed to the Parish Office via email: SacramentalOLA@cgorg.au
Updates and information about the Sacramental program will be published in the school newsletter and Parish bulletin throughout the year.
School Masses
As a school, we regularly attend the Wednesday morning 9:30am Mass at St John Vianney’s Church. The choir sings at this Mass and sometimes our students have a role in other parts of the celebration. Parents and friends of our school are welcome to join us alongside parishioners at this Mass. Dates the school will be attending Mass this term are as follows:
29th November: Parish Mass, 9:30am (led by Year 1)
Friday 8th December: Year 6 Graduation Mass, 12:15pm

School Wide Positive Behaviours
- This week has been the last week for borrowing at SJV. Next week we will start the collection of all library books and resources for our end of year stock take. Please have a look under beds, back of bookshelves, in the car, bottom of school bags, etc for any missing books. A friendly reminder that we have a $10 replacement fee for any lost or damaged books.
- Tomorrow is the last day for ordering from our Scholastic Book Club. Thank you to the families that have purchased from our Book Club this year! The points that we receive from your purchases has given us just over $200 in extra books for our library.
- First Aid - On Monday 27th November all classes will be participating in a mini first aid course. A trained first aid teacher will conduct the classes. Students will participate in a lesson that investigates how to contact emergency services, what they could do to best help treat burns and bleeds, bites and stings, asthma and anaphylaxis and conduct basic life support (including CPR from Year 3-6).
Happy reading
SUSTAINABILITY @ SJV
- The lunchtime sustainability group is very excited to have produced our very first worm juice. We have been collecting our class and canteen fruit and veg scraps and placing them into school worm/ compost bins. We are excited to use this worm and compost juice to improve our soil. You can also purchase some of this amazing juice for your own gardens!!
- We have been busy planting!!! Kindergarten have planted a new native garden in our school courtyard and have been rotating the special job of watering our new baby plants each day! We have some new trees growing (they would have enjoyed the rain this week) and you may see some new plants popping up in some of our playground garden beds! If you are staying in Canberra over the January holiday period and would like to water some of our gardens (and having a play on the playground!!), please let Mrs Spackman know.
- Market Garden - The sustainability team will have a market garden at our end of year thank you BBQ and carols. You can purchase tomato seedlings, fresh herbs and spinach, leeks, spring onions, baby carrots, potatoes, etc. We will also be selling some plants such as strawberries, hydrangeas, gardenias and lemons which could be great gifts for Christmas. All money raised will go into buying new seedlings for our first 2024 planting!
- One of our tadpoles has legs!!!!!!! Seven weeks into our Frogwatch program and not only are the children excited but our staff and visitors to the school are as well. The tadpoles have "Taddie day care" each and every morning where they sun themselves to help them grow stronger !! Do you know how difficult it is to take photos of tadpoles!!!! Watch this space for more tadpole stories and many more legs!!
The Tadpole
Small and black, I wriggle,
And life is most surprising!
Wiggle! waggle! wiggle!
There's every now and then a most
Exciting change in me,
I wonder, wiggle! waggle!
What I shall turn out to be!
Thank you!
Happy Gardening and tadpole watching !!
The Sustainability Team
Our classrooms are full of excitement as we witness multiple life cycles. Our tadpoles are developing back legs, the silkworms are all wrapped up in cocoons and we have welcomed hatching chicks this week. If you are wanting the chicks to join your family, they are $5 each
Mangos Have Arrived!
If you ordered mangoes through our fundraiser, they are ready to collect now from the ELC.
Time to Return Library Books
Please return all library books by next week, week 8, so that Mrs Comley can start the end of year stocktake.
Walk to school
Thank you to all who participated in our first walk to school morning. It was a huge success with many children and families joining in. It was a lovely start to the day as we walked and talked all the way to school.

A beautiful story of friendship and forgiveness, apology and acceptance, with singing and dancing bears and a girl with golden hair. With gentle audience interaction and songs to sing along to, Goldilocks and the Three Bears is the perfect introduction to the world of theatre.
Bring along a teddy bears picnic (cushions and/or blanket) and sit close to the stage, and make sure to stay after the show to have a chat with the cast!
Special free Performances in Queanbeyan. 14th & 15th December
Recommended for small and big kids and their teddy bears!

Yikes, the school holidays are coming! What to do with YOUR Thing One and Thing 2??!!Here’s an idea..! Bring the whole family to The Cat in the Hat for an experience they’ll never forget… The story has been around for over 50 years and kids still love it… just like you did!Two bored kids (this was way before iPads). One rainy day (we’ve all had a few of those). And one crazy cat wearing a red-striped hat (where was the background check for that babysitter?!).In 1957, Dr Seuss used only 200 words to write his classic tale. More than 50 years later, The Cat in the Hat is a much-loved children’s phenomenon. The play was adapted for the stage in 2009 by the National Theatre of Britain.
The Cat in The Hat interrupts this rainy afternoon with his unexpected visit to Sally and her brother’s cosy home. Their outspoken and outraged pet Fish is astounded and concerned, but this cat will not be deterred. He will teach us all to make our own fun with nothing but a little imagination: “It’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how.”
Along with Thing One and Thing Two, the cat will fill the theatre with mischievous humour and madcap style. Young and old alike will delight in this lively adaptation of a classic book coming to life before your very eyes.
Spoiler alert: Things run amuck, and quickly!
