Dear Parents
May this week bring you abundant opportunities to flourish and succeed. As we step through the month of October, may you find the courage and strength to overcome any challenges that come your way. May God guide and protect you. Amen
Class Structure 2024
I have now finalised the survey that asked our community "what you thought was best for class structures in 2024."
After analysis of the survey, I have concluded that a K-4 model using a straight class structure and a multi-age 5/6 will best suit our community moving forward.
The survey had 46 respondents from 89 families and 20+ staff. The respondent rate was very good (30% is considered a good response rate, 50% is considered excellent) and as such was able to give me a clear indication of our community’s ideas and wishes on the topic.
The majority of respondents indicated that they would like, either straight classes K-6 or K-4. Looking at the written reasons, which ranged from social-emotional to academic, I believe the best fit for our community was the K-4 straight class and multi-age 5/6 structure.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the survey helping me make a clear informed decision.
Swimming Lessons
As agreed by community, Swimming Lessons have been scheduled for the last week in December. The school has secured a price of $13 per lesson and will pay for the transport for all students through our excursion budget. The total price for one student is $52, $95 for two students, $135 for three students and $170 for four students. The idea of this pricing is to keep things affordable for families. If this is financially difficult for your family please contact the school. Please note, this is not an opt in or opt out activity, it is a sport expectation.
Fete
The Fete is extremely close, and we will need all hands-on deck to bring it home. The SCC has listened to your responses from their Survey and are planning how to support the learning of all students at SJV through some very effective purchases.
For this to happen we still need volunteers for some stalls and parents to help sell raffle tickets. It would also be helpful for our families who have raffle tickets to sell the remainder and begin to return sold books and possibly collect a new one.
Raffle Tickets - FAMILY INCENTIVES - Repeat Notice
● The family who returns the most sold tickets will receive a $50 My Sweet Lady gift voucher (one of our amazing parents at our school, Ash, makes seriously delicious cakes and has donated this prize).
● Weekly draw to win 1 x canteen voucher for fully sold books returned in that week (from weeks 1-7 in Term 4) Drawn each Friday at the morning school assembly.
● The family who sells each winning ticket will receive a $50.00 cash prize.
● As part of our Final prize to families for returning sold ticket books, we have a double pass to give away to attend Dr Seuss's the Cat in the Hat Live on Stage at Canberra Theatre during the summer school holidays. Drawn Friday 1st December.
There are many chances for you to win prizes just for selling the raffle tickets. If you would like more books, please come into the Front Office and Jet can organise them for you
Parent Class Contacts
We are now collecting names from parents who would like to be a class contact for their child’s class in 2024. The role of the contact is to welcome families with the help of the school, organise 2-3 student or parent events for the year (eg. a mums/dads night out, some fun play on our playground one afternoon or a swim at Mt Stromlo Leisure Centre). Thank you for those parents who have already contacted us and expressed an interest in this role.
Families Leaving SJV
It is that time of year that some families receive postings, leave the state for new work or win lotto, this can mean that they need to leave the SJV family. If you fall into any of these categories and will be leaving our school at the end of this year, please email the Front Office. It is a government requirement that we record this and register the new school of your child(ren).
God Bless

Grand Friends Day
The children will arrive at school as per normal and will have their normal Friday assembly where Merit Awards and Birthday Cards will be handed out.
We will also draw the name of the student or family that is the lucky winner of the Canteen Voucher for returning their Raffle Tickets this week.
The whole school will walk over to the church for a whole school mass to celebrate our Grand Friends
After Mass, the school will make their way back to classes and with the help of our Grand Friends make kites together, take them outside and fly them in the playground.
After flying your kites, the tummy will start to grumble ready for a slice or two of pizza.
It is after lunch, if our Grand Friends want to leave, we will say our goodbyes. If our Grand Friends still want to have more fun, we welcome them to stay and enjoy the fun of SideShow Alley.
For specific times, please read Mrs DeRosa's piece in this newsletter.
Sideshow Alley
The Year 5 and Year 6 students have worked tirelessly to make tomorrow afternoon a fun day for all to raise funds for Catholic Mission to support the people of Timor-Leste.
Purchasing tokens via Qkr has now closed, so if your child/children still would like to participate please bring along 10cent pieces for (1 token) or $1 for (10 tokens)
The senior students have planned many activities for the children to particpate in.
Classroom teachers will handout the tokens just prior to Sideshow Alley, if your little one has coins, please let them know that their teacher will collect the coins and trade them for tokens.
Please note - Merit Awards will be handed out at NEXT Friday's morning assembly.

2023 SJV Fete - Best Day Ever!
We are 10 DAYS away from this year’s Fete, being held on Saturday 4th November, 10am-2pm. Make sure you tell your family, friends and neighbours to come along and enjoy a great day.

You only have SIX DAYS to pre-purchase a ride wristband - get in quick, last orders are next Wednesday 1st November to get the discounted rate of $25. After that there’ll only be sales on fete day at the full price of $30.
You can pre-purchase for your friends/cousins/nieces/nephews/neighbours so don't forget to add them to your order.
The ride wristband gives unlimited turns on the rock climbing wall, giant slide, TWO jumping castles and lasertag - more fun than you can poke a stick at!
Don't forget to pre-purchase your child’s portrait which will be available for sale at the school fete. Pre-pay on QKR for $4 and take home on fete day.
If you are having trouble accessing QKR on your phone you can log into your account via their website: https://qkr-store.qkrschool.com/store/#/home
Flyers
Some fete flyers will be coming home with your child this week for you to please put in letterboxes in your local area when you go for a walk. This is a great way to advertise our fete in the local area - we want as many people as possible to know about the Best Day Ever at the SJV Fete!
You could also pass on to work colleagues, friends, neighbours. If you need more please grab some from the front office or email Jet to ask for more to be sent home with your child.
Football Australia Clinics
For all the football (soccer) mad kids out there, we will have two Football Australia coaches running football skills clinics at the fete from 11am-12:30pm.
Volunteers
Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to help this year. We will be sending out an info email next week to keep an eye out for that. If you’re unsure of your volunteer timeslot send us an email and we’ll let you know.
If you've not put your hand up, there is still time to volunteer! Email sjvfete@gmail.com to let us know that you can help out.
White Elephant, Toys, Books
You can still drop off items for the Toys, Books and White Elephant stalls between 8:30am-3:30pm on school days, please leave your items outside the rooms for our volunteers to sort.
Mega Cash Raffle
We’ve already had 41 books returned for our Mega cash raffle! That is such an awesome effort with still 5 weeks until the draw date.
Know someone with a birthday coming up? With first prize of $1000 and second prize $500 a few raffle tickets would make a great gift!
Congratulations to the Bourke family who won the first week’s canteen prize draw.
FAMILY INCENTIVES
- The family who returns the most sold tickets will receive a $50 My Sweet Lady gift voucher (one of the amazing parents at our school, Ash, makes seriously delicious cakes and has donated this prize) My Sweet Lady
- Weekly draw to win 1 x canteen voucher for fully sold books returned in that week (from weeks 1-7 in Term 4)
- The family who sells each winning ticket will receive a $50.00 cash prize.
- Each book sold will go into a draw to win 2 tickets to see The Cat in the Hat at the Canberra Theatre next year.
So, sell as many tickets as possible to increase your chance of winning these awesome prizes..
We are still looking for someone to coordinate selling tickets outside Cooleman Court, as well as people to assist in selling raffle tickets on the weekends (assistants can help one weekend or several).
Coordinating involves collecting raffle tickets, Ipad and square reader from the Front Office, determining days and times for the selling of raffle tickets, informing the Fete Committee of intended selling days/times to allow for communication to the school community who can volunteer to assist with selling raffle tickets at Cooleman Court.
If you think this sounds like something you could do and would like to volunteer to coordinate the selling of tickets outside Cooleman Court please email sjvfete@gmail.com.
