Dear SJV Community
It is great to be back from my Sabbatical and in amongst staff and students. Thank you to Mrs De Rosa who ran the school in my absence and the whole staff for the hard work completed to end Term 3.
Dear people, love Jesus Christ more and more!. Our life is a response to his call and you will be happy and will build your life well if you can answer this call. May you feel the Lord’s presence in your life. He is close to you as a companion, as a friend who knows how to help and understand you, who encourages you in difficult times and never abandons you. Pope Francis 2017
Survey - Multi age or Single Stream Classes
There are positives for both multi age (eg. two groups of 3/4 and 5/6) composite classes and for single streamed classes (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6), this means we review our class structure annually. Due to our current numbers and what we can predict into the future, we now have an opportunity to make a renewed, considered choice of either format or a mixture of both.
This information was presented in the Newsletter last term but I am still seeking responses from several families.
I have provided the link below for those families who have not participated in this survey yet. Please make your thoughts known on this two minute activity.
Thank you in anticipation for your valued feedback. Please click on the link below.

School Fete November 4th - Volunteers Needed
Today a letter has been sent home asking for volunteers. PLEASE RESPOND! Many times I am told by parents that they would like to help but often can't make an event. This is the one event that we really need you to volunteer 1-2 hrs for. If you don't know how to volunteer, just contact the Front Office and we will pass your details on. There is also a need for the committee to borrow some rice cookers for food stalls. If you have one that we can borrow, that would be great.
Year 5/6 BYOD - 2024
In Years 5/6 the children bring in their own devices (laptop) to use at school. The aim of this program is to prepare students for high school where they need to be responsible for bringing a device to and from school and taking care of it. It also helps with their time management for completing set school tasks.
Next week a letter will go home to our current Year 4 parents outlining the program, to make sure that you are prepared for 2024. Parents often buy these devices during the Black Friday or Boxing Day Sales and use them as presents.
Office Administration Procedure
As you are aware Mrs Simpson works very hard, often at school well after her allotted time. This is because she is a very giving person.
I ask for your help by making sure that if you need to contact a teacher or staff member about your child, that you do so directly and not use Mrs Simpson as an intermediary. This usually occurs when parents send Jeanette an email asking her to contact a student's classroom teacher. I have directed Jeanette to send this article to any parent who asks her to do so, that way you understand the process. The exception to this rule is if you need to make contact in an emergency. Below I have placed the link to our website that has staff contact details but you can also use the Compass App to contact teachers as well. https://www.sjv.act.edu.au/our-school/our-staff
Maths Club
Now that I have returned, Maths Club will be opening up on Thursday morning again at 8:30am. If your child is in Years 3-6 and they would like some extension or extra support. Please make sure you are at the Front Office by 8:30am
Working Bee
Normally, we would hold a Working Bee prior to the fete, however our playground is looking good and I would like all efforts to be placed towards volunteering for our largest fundraiser. Therefore there will be no Working Bee this term.
Uniform Term 4
Just a reminder that we are in full summer uniform for Term 4. This also means summer sports uniform. If you are not sure what the uniform is, please contact the uniform shop. If you are not sure when your child's sports days are, please contact your classroom teacher directly. A reminder that sneakers should only be worn on Sport Days.
Classroom Contacts for 2024 needed.
The last couple of years have been difficult with trying to organise outside school events. Moving forward, it would be lovely to see all classes having someone to liase a get together to enjoy gatherings outside of school time.
A Class Contact role can include:
- Welcoming new families to our school after being notified of their arrival by the front office.
- Organising help for a family in need.
- Organising a student event like hot chocolate and afternoon play or soccer after school for their grade level.
These type of fun activities need not be large or often. One event a semester is enough to enhance our wonderful community and keep parents in contact with each other, something very much needed for everyone after the last couple of years. If you can help in this area for 2021, it would be very much appreciated. Please email me to let me know you would be keen to be a Class Contact for next year.
Classroom Considerations for 2024
As is the practice at SJV, the staff will discuss how we place students in grades 3-6 for 2024 as the school believes that the classroom teachers are best placed to make these decisions based on their time spent with all stakeholder. This process may change depending on the survey results mentioned above.
If you would like to discuss specific needs of your child in regard to next years placement, please make an appointment with me from now until the end of week four to discuss your child's needs. I will ensure that teachers know any issues raised by you, when they work through class placements.
God Bless

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
Celebrating Children's Week - Grand Friends Day - 27th October 2023
We are excited to invite all SJV Grand Friends to share some time with us. Grand Friends are invited to join us for Mass beginning at 9.30am. Following Mass our special guests will move to classrooms for a 'Kite' making activity with children.
From about 11.15am, children will meet with their Grandparent/s for some kite flying and a shared lunch (Pre-ordered Pizza & garlic bread). We are hoping it’s a sunny day for a shared picnic and some outside time.
At this time children from the ELC will also join families for a shared lunch and participate in some Buddy activities in the afternoon, including: from 12.00pm, Year 5/6 students will host their annual 'Side Show Alley' activities. These mini fete activities raise funds for Catholic Missions.
Playground Improvements
During the holidays, we welcomed the delivery and installation of a mud kitchen, stage theatre and a market place cubby house. The children have used these new additions with enthusiasm. During the next few weeks the school will purchase kitchen items, puppets and market items to further enhance the students lunchtime activities.
These additions have been possible because of winning second prize in a Castle and Cubby competition at the end of last year, together with our Walkathon fundraising efforts.
You may have also noticed a number of unexpected holes on the edges of the oval. We did have an eager 'gopher' during the holidays, a human one that is - Mr Spackman, he very kindly dug holes which Mrs Spackman and her sustainability students are busily filling over the next few weeks with trees. Thank you!

Gospel Reflection Matthew 22:1-14
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about a royal wedding feast. It reminds us of the importance of accepting God's invitation into His kingdom. Just like the guests who declined the invitation, we sometimes let worldly distractions keep us from God's love. Teaching our children the lesson from this parable is crucial. We aim to nurture in our students a deep understanding of faith, gratitude, and the significance of accepting God's love. Encouraging them to wear the "wedding garment" of love and kindness, they can be a shining example of God's grace in the world. We pray that our children embrace this message and strive to be loving, faithful, and humble in their lives.
Sacraments 2024
Students who are eligible to make one of the Sacraments (Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation) next year have received a formal invitation from the Parish to be part of the Sacramental program for 2024. These invitations were sent home with students last term. We encourage you to read the information (on the back of the invitation) and visit the Parish's website for more information. The Parish website is: https:stjvwestoncreekblogspot.com/
If your child has not received an invitation and you would like them to receive one of the Sacraments, or if your child has received an invitation for the wrong Sacrament, please let me know via email: laura.matchett@cg.catholic.edu.au
Eligibility for each Sacrament is as follows:
Reconciliation - open to students who have been baptised Catholic and who are in Year 3 or above.
First Eucharist - open to baptised Catholic students who have made their Reconciliation and are in Year 4 or above.
Confirmation - open to baptised Catholic students who have received their First Eucharist and who are in Year 6 or above.
It is possible to receive more than one Sacrament in the same year, however, the Sacraments usually need to made in order (i.e. Reconciliation, followed by First Eucharist, then Confirmation). These questions and other general enquiries about the Sacramental program are best directed to the Parish Office via email: SacramentalOLA@cg.org.au
Updates and information about the Sacramental program will be published in the school newsletter and Parish bulletin throughout the year.

White Elephant, Toys, Books
Thank you for all the donations that came in on Sunday, we had an amazing amount of people arrive to drop off and sort through the Toys, Books and White Elephant donations. You can still drop off items between 8:30-3:30pm school days, please leave your items outside the rooms for our volunteers to sort.
Mega Cash Raffle
Our Mega cash raffle tickets are now available for sale. First prize is $1000 and second prize $500.
Make sure you return your sold ticket books and money ASAP - the draw to win the first canteen voucher will take place next week!
FAMILY INCENTIVES
- The family who returns the most sold tickets will receive a $50 My Sweet Lady gift voucher (one of the amazing parents at our school, Ash, makes seriously delicious cakes and has donated this prize)
- Weekly draw to win 1 x canteen voucher for fully sold books returned in that week (from weeks 1-7 in Term 4)
- The family who sells each winning ticket will receive a $50.00 cash prize.
So, sell as many tickets as possible to increase your chance of winning.
In addition to selling tickets to family/friends/colleagues we also sell tickets outside Cooleman Court to the general public on weekends for an hour or two from weeks 1-6 in Term 4. The Mega Cash raffle is our major fundraiser and selling outside Cooleman Court is integral to the success of the fete and how much money we raise for our school.
We will be selling outside Cooleman Court THIS Saturday from 2-3pm. If you can help please email sjvfete@gmail.com
We are still looking for someone to coordinate this activity, as well as people to assist in selling raffle tickets on the weekends (assistants can help one weekend or several).
Coordinating involves collecting raffle tickets, ipad and square reader from the Front Office, determining days and times for the selling of raffle tickets, informing the Fete Committee of intended selling days/times to allow for communication to the school community who can volunteer to assist with selling raffle tickets at Cooleman Court.
If you think this sounds like something you could do and would like to volunteer to coordinate the selling of tickets outside Cooleman Court please email sjvfete@gmail.com.

We received some exciting news this week in an email asking us to attend the Chief Minister's Reading Challenge awards. So proud of all of the SJV readers in our school.
To ensure correct payment is received, families are asked to order and pay for Book Club using the on-line LOOP platform.
Happy reading
Thank you for your ongoing support in the library.
SUSTAINABILITY @ SJV
This week we have been tree planting! Thank you Sustainable Schools, Transport Canberra and Yarralumla Nursery.
We have tadpoles! Thanks to Frogwatch and Icon Water, we have been given the opportunity to observe the life cycle of a Spotted Marsh or Grass frog. There has been much excitement across the school watching our new little friends swim around their tanks (some students have even attempted to name their frogs). We prepared the tadpoles habitat and released our given tadpoles into their new homes. Over the term we will watch them develop and grow and hopefully have some little froglets or frogs to be released by Frogwatch back into the Ginninderra catchment.
Thank you!
Happy Gardening !!
