Dear Parents
Welcome to the end of Week 3
As cold days approach I thought it would be good to ponder the prayer below.
Lord: In the midst of Winter, when the days are cold and wind can pierce remind us of the warmth of your love. In the midst of Winter, when days are short, dawn comes late, and dusk arrives early remind us that in the darkness your light still shines.
SJV Feast Day - Tomorrow
I am hoping some families may be able to join us tomorrow from 12.15pm to celebrate Mass in our school hall and/or the Variety Concert at 2.10pm.
At the Feast Day Mass to honour our Patron Saint we will officially bless the school 'Vision Wall.' Children will also spend the day reflecting on the life of St John Vianney, share a sausage sizzle lunch and end the day with the variety concert.
Survey Results
Sometime ago I asked parents to complete a survey about our school to give us feedback on how we are doing and how we can look to improve for the future. I would like to thank you for your overwhelming support for our school. The results polled show that our parents in every sector believe that SJV is performing at a very high standard, so much so that our results are 25-30% higher than the average CE school. The staff and I are very appreciative of your support.
Disco Ball – Don't forget the Adult Fun Disco Bingo night on Saturday 19th August. These nights are always a lot of fun - Book a table within your class cohort and take on the other years, you can bribe your way to win or maybe a fancy dress table might make you the winner - come along and enjoy the event - it's time to get the school back into having more events for children and mums and dads.
To book go onto QKR - book for a table of 10 or individual tickets.
CE TechOne
Soon a new CE/School Administration and Accounting system will be rolled out at SJV. This hopefully will not be a problem from a parent perspective as most of the change and extra work will land squarely on the shoulders of the Front Office. However, the school will need to ensure that all outstanding accounts from families are paid before the transition to the new system, so can I ask all parents that they please ensure their accounts are up to date.
Principal Sabbatical Leave
I have been given Principal’s Sabbatical Leave which is specifically for further study or Religious Reflection. As such I intend to visit the shrines of Portugal, Spain and France (taking note to visit the Parish of St John Vianney at Ars) whilst also visiting the Black Madonna in Poland. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to celebrate Mass in many of these holy places. In my absence this will mean that Mrs De Rosa will be acting Principal from 31st August to the end of the school term.
God Bless

Hats On!
Just a reminder that all students will need to wear their hat during school breaks, to and from school especially if they are walking or on a bike. Hats shield the face and head from sunburn.
It protects your eyes from the brightness of the sun, which can cause damage and it also helps to prevent skin cancers and skin damage. Many of us now know the dangers of repeated sunburn and have to get our skin checked on a regular basis.

Gospel Reflection Matthew 17:1-9
This week’s reflection comes from Young Catholics:
‘In this week’s Gospel, we encounter the awe-inspiring event of the Transfiguration. Jesus took three disciples – Peter, James, and John – up a high mountain. There, His divine glory shone forth, alongside Moses and Elijah. This significant moment highlights Jesus as the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets.’
‘The Transfiguration also offers us a foretaste of heaven, where we will behold God face to face in all of His glory. In our earthly journey, we often struggle to grasp the fullness of God’s presence and the reality of the afterlife. However, the Transfiguration reminds us that one day, in heaven, we will experience the radiant splendour of God’s divine presence. Like the apostles on Mount Tabor, we too will witness the glory of the Risen Christ, which will surpass anything we can currently comprehend.
The Feast of the Transfiguration calls us to embrace the call to holiness. As we contemplate the glorified Christ, we are invited to renew our commitment to living lives of virtue and grace. Just as the apostles were transformed by their encounter with the transfigured Christ, we are called to be transfigured by our encounter with Him in the Eucharist and through prayer. This transformation is an ongoing process, as we seek to become more like Christ and reflect His light to the world.’

St John Vianney Feast Day
We will be celebrating St John Vianney’s Feast Day tomorrow. I would like to thank Mrs Leah Malpas for all her hard work coordinating the day in my absence over recent weeks, it is looking to be a fantastic day. We will begin by learning about St John Vianney’s life and completing some reflection activities. We will be celebrating Mass at 12:15pm in our school hall where Father Michael will also bless our new wall mural. Parents, parishioners and friends of the school are welcome to join us at Mass. The day will end with our Variety Show and we are all looking forward to seeing our students showcase their many talents!

Happy Birthday to Nora S, Isla C
We were very excited to begin our Mura Gadi program this term. To start the program, we watched the Acknowledgement of Country Playschool episode before heading out to our first destination to say our own Acknowledgement of Country. The children then enjoyed rolling down the hill, making Gunyahs (indigenous word for hut or home), meditating, drawing in the dirt, spotting birds and insects and so much more. Each week we will explore a new area in our local environment.
Men's Shed
Mrs Putt’s dad, Brian Charge, is a volunteer at the Men's Shed in Hall and, together with his merry band of willing helpers, made and painted five hobby horses for the ELC. The hobby horses are a welcome addition to our outdoor learning space. This type of play allows the children to think creatively, collaborate their ideas and develop literacy skills during play with stories they tell. We are very thankful to Brian and the Men's Shed for their generous donation and time.
Lids4Kids
Our plastic lids collection is starting to grow. Please continue to bring in your milk bottle lids so that we can send them to Lids4Kids for their recycling program and prevent them going to landfill. At the end of last term we held a Lids4Kids incursion where we learnt about recycling plastic lids that will then be repurposed into loose part toys.
Gymnastics Term 4
We always receive great feedback from children and parents when we participate in the gymnastics program at Woden Valley Gymnastics Club. The ELC children completed a 9 week program in Term 2 and have an opportunity to complete a second program in term 4. A form has been left at the front desk to seek your input.
Floriade Gnomes
Each year the ELC supports the Canberra Rotary Club’s Floriade Gnomes. We have purchased gnomes from Rotary for the children to paint in the lead up to Spring. We are looking forward to creating our own gnome wonderland in the gardens around St Jude’s for our whole community to enjoy.
Hats
Now that we’re getting closer to Spring, please ensure that your child has a labelled hat in their bag. We monitor the UV rating closely, when UV is 3 or more we must wear hats as part of our sun protection policy.
