Dear SJV Families
We are at the end of Week 9 with a very cold end to the term in store. Please keep in mind all the Canberra families who have no place to call home and the help and charity that they need.
In prayer, we ask God to surround people experiencing homelessness with His protection. Dear Lord, Your Word often talks about people in need finding safety. We pray today for homeless people, that children and families in need with no place to call home will be guided to places of peace and security. Amen
Year 5/6P - Semester 2
I would like to inform you of the teaching arrangements for Year 5/6P for Terms 3 and 4. As you know there is a incredible shortage of teaching staff for all schools, so I am very happy that we have filled this role with quality educators.
The teaching position for 5/6P will be a job share role taken on by Mrs Elizabeth (Liz) Diskin who will be teaching Monday and Tuesday and Mr Ben Lowe who will be teaching Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
I am grateful to both teachers who will taking on this very important role for our school.
Winter Woolies
We will be holding a Winter Woolies Day tomorrow on Friday 23rd June, where students can wear their favourite winter woolies (favourite jumper, hoodie, or oodie) in exchange for a donation of much needed supplies for the Vinnies Night Patrol van. We welcome donations of:
- Non-perishable food
- Blankets
- Gloves
- Socks
- Jackets
- Beanies
- Sleeping bags
Thank you to all those families who have already made a generous donation.
Reports on Compass Friday 23rd June
When reviewing the report with your child you may wish to use the following language. Though the grade indicators are printed on the report, the following may be more meaningful to children. An E is a starting point, rather than a fail. It means a child is working on the same tasks as everyone else, but is finding Everything in that area a challenge. A child receiving a D is Developing skills but needs some more support and Direction. The child who receives a C in a given area is Consistently Coping well with work he or she Can do by themself. A B is Brilliant because he or she can do a superb job, all By themself. To get an A is Absolutely Amazing because a child’s work would have to be Awesome All the time.
Kindergarten only use a four point scale of which reflects the grades of E, D, C and B.
I am sure that each child will be able to celebrate their successes as well as set goals for next term and beyond.
New Computers for 3/4CA and 3/4P
Today an order has been placed for 36 new computers for our 3/4 classes. This will give the children brand new Microsoft Surface laptops with a 1-1 device ratio replacing our Chromebooks which are starting to show their age.
Notification - Change in IT System Term 3/4
Under direction of Catholic Education, Canberra & Goulburn (CECG), St John Vianney's will be migrating to a new finance system, which will integrate with the Compass Parent Portal and Compass App. It is anticipated that SJV will begin to use this system by the end of next term.
The move to the new system will increase the integration of the school finances into Compass, with parents/caregivers also having visibility of financial transactions within Compass.
There will be changes to the design of fee statements, which will include a newly assigned BPAY Biller Code and Customer Reference Number (CRN), that will be issued to you once the system has migrated on your Term 4 fee statements.
The payment of school fees directly into a school bank account will no longer be possible in the new system, and the school bank account is being centralised across CECG. If you make regular payment of school fees via Direct Debit, please note that these will not be available after the migration and you will need to ensure that you move to an alternative payment option.
To assist with a smooth transition to the new system, please ensure that the school is aware of any updated contact details for your family.
We appreciate your support during this transition. If you have any questions, please contact our school’s friendly front manager.
God Bless
Peter Rodda

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
At SJV, our students learn Italian, enjoying a 40 minute lesson each week with Signora Monagle. Below are some of the topics they have been learning about this term.
Kindergarten, Year 1 and year 2 students are learning simple conversations, animal and food names.
Years 3 and 4 students are revising animal names, counting to 30 and writing conversations to a partner.
Year 5 are practising their oral language skills with a partner and having school conversations with each other. They are learning about Italian food and counting to 50.
Year 6 students are revising all the language they know and focusing on the correct vocabulary when writing basic conversations. They have investigated identifying the appropriate article for Italian food words.
All classes have focused on an Italian story - 'La Gallinella Rosa' and are perfecting saying the Italian prayer. Classes have also explored a gondola ride and focused on Venice as part of immersing in the Italian Culture.
Mrs Monagle, our Italian Teacher, prides herself on immersing the students in the language and culture. Yesterday we celebrated all things Italian by having a family lunch which included pizza, garlic bread and a choice of drink (green cordial, white water, or red cordial).
Thank you to Mel Harding and all the canteen volunteers who helped make the event a huge success.

Gospel Reflection Matthew 10:26-33
‘Jesus assures the Twelve that God cares about them.’
In the Gospel of Matthew, we listen to the difficulties Jesus’ Disciples were to face and the possible persecutions the community of believers would endure.
Standing up for what we believe in can sometimes be difficult. This may be standing up and announcing our faith when it is not always safe to do so or very simply not being a bystander and standing up for those who cannot do it for themselves. Sometimes our fear of judgement can get in the way of doing what we know is right and what should be done.
The phrase ‘do not be afraid’ is repeated multiple times throughout the Gospel. If we believe in the Lord, we have nothing to fear as God will protect and guide our words and
actions.
Next time when you are faced with a difficult situation, remember the words in the Gospel,
If we have faith in our Lord, speak boldly.
If we have faith in our Lord, speak openly..
If we stand up and spread the Good News, the Lord will always love, encourage and protect us.
Vinnies Winter Appeal
The Vinnies Night Patrol van visited our school this week and showed the students through the different items they would share and give to people in need. They also showed the students through the 'kitchen' at the back of the van and discussed the different types of things they may serve to people who access the 'Vinnies Night Patrol' van. Year 5 and 6 were given the opportunity to role play a scenario and how to help people in our community.
Our Youth Ministry team has been busy promoting our Winter Woolies Day which is on tomorrow, where students can wear their favourite winter woolies (favourite jumper, hoodie, oodie) in exchange for a donation of much needed supplies for the Vinnies Night Patrol van. We welcome donations of:
- Non-perishable food
- Blankets
- Gloves
- Socks
- Jackets
- Beanies
- Sleeping bags
Donations may be given to your child’s classroom teacher or the front office. Your generous support of this worthy cause is very much appreciated. Donations will be accepted until 30th of June, 2023.
Students have been told to wear free winter woolies clothes. If they don't have warm clothing, they can wear their school sports uniform and appropriate foot wear for sport.
School Masses Term 2
As a school, we regularly attend the Wednesday morning 9:30am Mass at St John Vianney’s Church. The choir sings at this Mass and sometimes our students have a role in other parts of the celebration. Parents and friends of our school are welcome to join us alongside parishioners at this Mass.
We will be attending Mass next Wednesday, 28th June.
Sacraments 2023
Congratulations to our First Eucharist candidates,Hanston, Joseph and Marqas who received the Sacrament last weekend. We will continue to hold you and your families in our prayers. We keep Olive in our prayers who will be making her sacrament this coming weekend.

Lids4Kids
The ELC was lucky to have a visit from Lids4Kids this week. Tim talked about recycling and sustainability and led the children through a colour sorting activity. He showed us what can be created using the lids that we recycle. The ELC will be collecting plastic lids from milk bottles and yoghurt pouches so please drop in your lids for recycling.
