A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"

with Nina De Rosa
PARLE ITALIANO?
Can you speak Italian or another language? I am so lucky I can answer a proud yes to the question.  Being first generation Australian from migrant Italian parents, I was bilingual from birth and in fact am able to switch mid-sentence from Italian to English and back with ease.  In fact, depending on where I am, I sometimes need to think in Italian to get the right English word or visa versa.
Nevertheless, learning a language pushes your brain to get familiar with new grammar and vocabulary rules. It allows you to actively build your memory, to make connections and use them in different contextual situations. Through understanding a different language, your understanding of your native language is further developed.

At SJV, our students learn Italian, enjoying a 40 minute lesson each week with Signora Monagle. Below are some of the topics they have been learning about this term.

Kindergarten, Year 1 and year 2 students are learning simple conversations, animal and food names.

Years 3 and 4 students are revising animal names, counting to 30 and writing conversations to a partner.

Year 5 are practising their oral language skills with a partner and having school conversations with each other.  They are learning about Italian food and counting to 50.

Year 6 students are revising all the language they know and focusing on the correct vocabulary when writing basic conversations.  They have investigated identifying the appropriate article for Italian food words.

All classes have focused on an Italian story - 'La Gallinella Rosa' and are perfecting saying the Italian prayer.  Classes have also explored a gondola ride and focused on Venice as part of immersing in the Italian Culture.

Mrs Monagle, our Italian Teacher, prides herself on immersing the students in the  language and culture. Yesterday we celebrated all things Italian by having a family lunch which included pizza, garlic bread and a choice of drink (green cordial, white water, or red cordial).

Thank you to Mel Harding and all the canteen volunteers who helped make the event a huge success.
