Dear SJV Community
Welcome to the end of Wk 5.
As we come to the close of Pentecost I thought the prayer below would be fitting.
Loving God, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his disciples and to us. May we go out with joy and conviction, to share the Good News of the gospel with all those we meet. Amen.
Welcome Nathanael Matchett
Congratulations to Laura and Ryan who are now the proud parents of Nathanael. He arrived weighing 3.27kg and was 49.5cm in height. Below is a beautiful picture of mum with bub. The school can't wait to have a vist from Laura with her beautiful son.
Illness
A timely reminder that it is the season of coughs colds, flu and covid, all of which we have experienced over the last few weeks. Remember if your child is unwell and coughing and sneezing that they should stay home until they are well. This will prevent the spread of all the nasties which means teachers will remain well to teach their class and fellow students will remain fit for school.
Biggest Morning Tea - Wednesday 22nd May
Thank you to Ash Donley, Jenis Martin and Julian Henderson who helped prepare items and donated them to our canteen to raise money for the Australian Cancer Council. This was a great day with happy students and a grateful charity.

The Yr 5/6 class contacts have reached out via Compass to be the contact points to help form a team for the running of this event. If you can lend a hand please email your class contacts Rebecca Battaglini and Penny Bufalo for 5/6J and Anita Wilkinson for 5/6P so they can create a list of organisers for this fun event.
School Sausage Sizzle - Week 6 Friday 7th June
A winter sausage sizzle will be occurring on Friday of next week. Details have gone out on Qkr! and in student bags today.
Compass
It has come to our attention that some of our parent/carer skills on using Compass are a little rusty. As such the school is trying to organise an information session on the platforms use. This will cover areas like, accessing school reports, checking on daily attendance, how to opt in on a scheduled event (sports carnival's etc), replying to school and teacher communication etc. The list is quite long but important. Please keep your eyes open for this event.

Australian, state and territory governments have agreed on a new approach to collecting data on school students with disability. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability NCCDSSD) provides Australian schools, parents, education authorities and the community with information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the adjustments they receive.
The national data collection on students with disability reinforces the existing obligations that schools have towards students under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. It counts the number of students who are supported under these obligations based on the professional judgement of teachers and their understanding and knowledge of their students. The Standards require that all Australian schools ensure that students with disability are able to access and participate in education on the same basis as students without disability.
Under the Standards, all schools are required to make or provide 'reasonable adjustments' for students where necessary to enable their access and participation. This includes all students with or without a ‘diagnosed’ disability. Therefore, even if your child does not have a specified disability, they may still need adjustments to access their learning. Every student has needs whether it is formally diagnosed or not. Adjustments of some kind are required by most students. Adjustments reflect the assessed individual needs of the student.
Adjustments
The Standards also require that reasonable adjustments are provided in consultation with the student and/or their associates; for most students, this means their parents and carers. Therefore classroom teachers will contact parents if we believe that a child receives adjustments and are therefore part of the collection of data. The Standards recognise that not all students with disability are alike. Students with disability have specific needs, including the type and level of support they need in order to access and participate in all aspects of education on the same basis as students without disability
The national data collection on students with disability acknowledges the work already undertaken in our school to support students with a disability. It assists schools to identify and to support students with disability so they can access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers.

SunSmart – means no hats in June and July
As a SunSmart school the Cancer Council ACT does not recommend sun protection in Canberra during June and July, SJV does not enforce the wearing of hats during this time. From Monday (3rd June), the “no hat, no play” rule is shelved for the next two months. Children are encouraged to wear school beanies during the colder months.

In this Gospel, Jesus celebrates the Last Supper with his disciples, giving us the gift of the Eucharist. He took bread and wine, blessed them, and shared them, saying they were his body and blood. When we receive Communion at Mass, we welcome Jesus into our hearts. This special meal teaches us about love, sharing, and remembering Jesus. It reminds us to love and care for one another as Jesus loves us. Let's thank Jesus for the Eucharist and strive to follow him with open hearts, just like the disciples.
As a school, we regularly attend the Wednesday morning 9:30 am Mass at St John Vianney’s Church. The choir sings at this Mass and sometimes our students have a role in other parts of the celebration. Parents and friends of our school are welcome to join us alongside parishioners at this Mass. Dates the school will be attending Mass term and next term are as follows:
Term 2 Week 7 - Wednesday 12th June: Parish Mass, 9:30am (led by 5/6P)
Term 2 Week 9 - Wednesday 26th June: Parish Mass, 9:30am (led by Year 2)
Our students lead our school in Prayer Celebrations marking significant events in both our religious and secular community. Prayer Celebrations which will occur this term and next term are:

Prayer Celebrations are held in our hall and all parents and friends of our school are welcome to attend.
Registrations for Confirmation for 2024 are open and we encourage families who would like their child to receive this Sacrament this year to register as soon as possible via the ParishQkrr! account. Enrolment Period Ends Tomorrow!
Enrolment period closes tomorrow, Friday 31 May for Catholic primary schools and ELCs. Current ELC families do need to submit an application for kindergarten. Go to the school websites for more details and the application link.
Vinnies Winter Appeal
The St Jude’s community are collecting items for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. ELC families have been asked to provide new warm winter socks and beanies for children or adults. We will have a collection basket in the ELC foyer, the final collection of donations will be Friday 7th June.
Pyjama Day
Our second fundraiser for the Winter Appeal is a pyjama day this Friday 31st May. We ask that students bring a gold coin donation.

The program at St John Vianney's Primary School Your OSHC is unique and tailored to the educational ethos and values of your school and the individual needs of the children in the service. In every before and afterschool session, your coordinator designs a featured activity to engage the children. Complementing the feature activity are experience zones that give children the freedom of choice and guide them to learn through play. Our Pupil Free Day sessions have at least three key feature activities, based around family and child feedback.
