Dear SJV Families
Welcome to Week 10
I would like to thank the students, parents and teachers for making our first week back to school so settled. Students have focussed on classroom tasks and immediately began completing their work to a high standard. Below I have placed a suitable prayer to start our new semester.
Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new semester, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.
Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us.
Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.
May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be place in your hands.
May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we come in contact with this semester. We thank you, Lord. Amen
Welcome Harvey John Perryman
We are happy to announce the wonderful news that Mrs Perryman and her husband have welcomed a baby boy on the 5th July.
Welcome to the world Baby Harvey.
Pick-Up and Drop Off
A reminder for all parents to park in the allotted bays in the bitumen car park. Cars cannot park along the curb which is painted red. This is a thoroughfare for general traffic and parents will be asked to move their car if they are in this area. This request is for the safety of all our community. Thank you for your understanding.
Rostrum
Last night, with Mrs Malpas, I attended the Woden/Weston Rostrum finals. Hayden from 5/6J was our representative and he did the school proud, speaking brilliantly, with no mistakes and engaging his audience fully. The standard was extremely high and the student who took the competition out was also the winner from 2022, a tough act to top. I am very proud of the fact that although we are a small school, students are still given all the opportunities and support to compete at regional and state levels.
SJV Feast Day
We will celebrate our Feast Day on Friday 4th August. Much is planned with Mass in our school hall, a talent quest and a free Special Lunch scheduled (small cost for an extra sausage sandwich). This should be a fun day for everyone.
Free Uniform Day Tomorrow - A Chocolate Bar Donation
To support our School Fete, our Committee have planned a uniform free day tomorrow. We would ask that each child brings in a chocolate bar or block to school which will be used for our 'Chocolate Coin Toss' stall. To avoid temptation, I promise that I will not store the chocolate in my office!
NAIDOC WEEK
This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC Week, yarning stories, art work and a NAIDOC Mass tomorrow these have been some of the highlights. I would like to thank Mrs Kain for organising these events to help celebrate our indigenous culture.
Computers
Thirty six new computers have just arrived and will soon be imaged by CE and distributed to our Year 3 and 4 students, ensuring one-to-one access to a device. These computers, like rulers and pencils, are just tools that students have access to. This means that when needed, students can use the best possible equipment to complete the task required.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN results will soon be mailed to schools and will be posted out to parents when they arrive. The NAPLAN interpretation and descriptions have changed and this will be evident when you look at the documentation. NAPLAN is one test on one day, but indicative results for our Yr 3 and Yr 5 cohorts, when averaged, have results in the 'Strong' and 'Exceeding' categories ranging from 70%-95% for the cohort. I am very happy with the progress and direction of our school and these results will help teachers further shape the student's learning towards their educational needs.
COMPASS Information Tuesday 1st August 4:45pm
Some parents completely understand Compass, our schools communication platform. Some parents are baffled by some of the intricacies and nuances of the system, if you fall into the latter category then this information session will be for you. Areas covered will be - logging in, accessing a news feed, contacting staff, accessing attendance data and student reports. I believe that many parents will find this session very informative. compass_Information_Session.pdf
Student Attendance
Just a reminder to all parents that if your child is going to be away from school due to illness, a family event or any other reason, to contact the school and let us know. It is a government requirement that all absences are explained and we should have this information either on the day of absence or no later than 5 days after the event. Thank you for your cooperation with this, it makes the school's administration much easier.
A Busy Term Ahead
Below I have placed some of the school activities we have planned for the term.
Most of these items with their specific dates appear in our Calendar, but I thought you might appreciate a general heads-up.

A big welcome to Ahsoka (KA), Esther, Skye and Isabella (Bella) - Bella's first day is tomorrow (Year 2JB), Arabella (Bella) and Diana (Year 3/4CA), Carter in 3/4P, Maryam in 5/6J and Awa in 5/6P. I have spoken to all these students and they have all settled into their new school beautifully.
God Bless

A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week"
Over the last 2 terms as a staff we have worked collaborately together with members of the CE and the SJV Community Council to update our School Vision Statement.
A vision provides a vivid picture of the school's values and objectives. By outlining what the school is trying to achieve, all of the stakeholders in the school community – teachers, students, families, and administration – can work together in a common direction toward growth.
What you read above is what we have agreed on.
On Friday 4th August, on SJV Feast Day as a school we will officially launch the new vision and bless the newly painted hall wall. All families are welcome to attend to help us celebrate. More details about the days events to follow.
Mrs D’s ‘Thought of the Week….’
‘If you are working on something exciting that you really care about. You don't have to be pushed.
The vision pulls you.’

Gospel Reflection Matthew 13:24-43
Then the virtuous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus imparts invaluable lessons through parables about the Kingdom of Heaven. He shares the story of wheat and weeds, reminding us that good and evil coexist in the world, yet God's love and justice will prevail. As parents and educators, we play a vital role in nurturing the seed of faith in our children's hearts. Let us strive to be patient sowers, cultivating virtues, and guiding them to follow Jesus’ teachings. Together, we can help our children become God's shining light, spreading love, compassion, and understanding in the world.
School Masses Term 3
As a school, we regularly attend the Wednesday morning 9:30 am Mass at St John Vianney’s Church. The choir sings at this Mass and sometimes our students have a role in other parts of the celebration. Parents and friends of our school are welcome to join us alongside parishioners at this Mass.

Week 2: Wednesday 26th July (led by 3/4CA)
Week 3: Friday 4th August - St John Vianney’s Feast day 12:15pm (in the school hall)

Vinniess Winter Appeal
Our local St Vincent de Paul group has expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the generous donation of winter woolies made by our school last term. We are assured they have been distributed to those in need. Thank you to everyone who was able to make a contribution to this year’s appeal. We are proud to belong to such a kind, compassionate and giving community.

The Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival has been running annually for over 25 years. It is the biggest carnival in NSW Primary School Sports with over 4,500 children competing in the event in front of over 7,000 spectators. The Touch and Netball Carnival is about coming together, playing and enjoying sports and meeting children from schools around Canberra and New South Wales.
BOOROWA TOUCH NETBALL CARNIVAL IS FRIDAY 20th OCTOBER 2023.

GOOD LUCK TO OUR MATILDAS IN TONIGHT'S GAME AGAINST IRELAND.
FUN FACTS
When were the Matildas formed?
How the Matildas got their name?
You may find it surprising, or jarring, to learn the team's nickname used to be the 'female Socceroos'.

Happy Birthday to Lachlan M and Oliver L
Welcome back to Term 3.
It is great to see so many ELC children coming so confidently into the ELC this week, which shows that they are making great progress in preparing for kindergarten. The children who attended our holiday care program enjoyed a wide range of activities. They explored nature, learnt about bugs and enjoyed lots of winter wonderland craft. They celebrated NAIDOC Week, went on a treasure hunt, read Possum Magic which led the children on a food journey and learnt about life on a farm. They were junior Masterchefs and finished off the holiday with a relaxing pyjama day. Thank you to our wonderful educators who run such an engaging, fun filled program.
ELC Staffing
We have been very fortunate to welcome three new educators to the ELC. Hong Peng has joined the Turtles team full time, Jessica Boag is in the Turtle class at the end of the week and Kajsa Aquilina is the new educator in the Stingray class.
Dance Concert
The Lobsters and Turtles have been busy preparing for the dance concert next week. The dress rehearsal is tomorrow, Friday 21 July so please ensure you have sent in costumes - black tops and black pants for the Turtles, and brown tops and black pants for the Lobsters.
Portfolios
We hope you have had a wonderful time looking through your child’s portfolio. Please remember to return it to the ELC so we can continue to add to it in semester 2.
Mura Gadi
Next week we commence the Mura Gadi program. Mura Gadi is an Indigenous term meaning ‘pathways of learning’. Every Tuesday and Thursday the classes go offsite to explore different areas in Weston Creek and learn from the land. Each location has a learning focus and each session begins with an acknowledgement of country. Please make sure the children are dressed for the weather on these days.
Hiccup – Excursion
The Turtle and Lobster classes will be attending an excursion to the Canberra Theatre on Friday 28 July to watch Hiccup! It is a hilarious musical extravaganza about working together and finding friendship. Please ensure you have returned your permission form.
At the end of last term we held a Lids4Kids incursion where we learnt about recycling plastic lids that will then be repurposed into loose part toys. We have set up a sorting net in our front foyer, please consider collecting all of your plastic bottle tops and bringing them in to add to our collection.
2024 ELC enrolment acceptance due now
Letters of offer have now been sent and acceptances are due this Friday 21 July. If you have not received any correspondence from us, please check your spam/junk folder or contact the ELC office.
