Dear SJV Families,
We are now well into the term with a full head of steam; goal setting, learning new and interesting things and making new friends. I think the student's prayer below encapsulates the 'buzz'.
Lord Jesus, I ask for Your help as I begin this new school year.
Allow me to experience Your presence in the many blessings You put before me.
Open my eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings.
Open my heart and mind to new friends and new teachers.
Give me a generous spirit to be enthusiastic with my studies and courage
to accept new opportunities.
Help me to be attentive to my teachers and let me experience Your
presence in my new friends.
Jesus, inspire me to do my best this year!
NAPLAN - Dates and Reporting Changes
NAPLAN has been moved from Term 2 to Term 1 Wk 7, beginning March 15th. Information on this important assessment will be sent home soon. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact our Naplan Coordinators, Mrs Kain or Mrs Perryman. Attached to this newsletter is information concerning how the reporting of NAPLAN will change for this year.
Camp
Wow! I have never seen so much rain, however, the children pushed through the weather and had an amazing time. The students threw themselves into all activities with canoeing and the flying fox being the favourites. Swimming was also a big hit because the children felt that they could not get any wetter anyway! A big thank you to our staff, Mrs Malpas, Mrs Perryman and Mr Scarfone who went above and beyond getting just as soaked as the children and had just as much fun.
School Clubs
At SJV we are always trying to engage all our students. As such we have many clubs available to the children this year, most of which have begun or start next week. I have placed a list below and if you child is interested, please ask them to contact the relevant teacher.
Gardening Club - Monday (Mrs Spackman)
Choir (Yrs 1-6) - Tuesday (Mrs Mullamphy)
Library Club - Wednesday (Mrs Spackman)
Games Club (Years 2-6) - Thursday (Mr Young)
Youth Ministry - Wednesday Mrs Matchett and Miss Blackwell
Lego Club - Thursday and Friday (Learning Support Team)
Ash Wednesday - Canteen
As next Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, traditionally marking a time of sacrifice, prayer and fasting. The canteen will ensure that there is is a fish option (Fish Fingers) available for those families who do not want their children to have meat.
SCC Meeting and Committee Members
Our first meeting for this year will be held on Monday the 20th February at 6pm. We have had two expressions of interest from parents to join the SCC but would welcome anyone else who wants to make a contribution to the school. I welcome an email expressing your interest and/or come along to our meeting on Monday night.

WALKATHON - Week 1 Term 2 - 28th April 2023
The Walk-a-thon is a route of approximately 5kms and is an opportunity for our community to exercise, and raise funds to revamp our sandpit and sensory areas.
Look out for more sand, a cubby house and extra sensory items and activities. Our school fundraising target this year is $8000.
Our current plan is for children to walk the course together with family, with the help of parents at check points along the way. Our intention is to still participate in the ‘colour fun’ at the end of the day.The children will receive a booklet outlining how just $10 will ensure a reward and instructions on how students can begin the fundraising. The more money raised the better their reward. The easiest way to help your child raise money is by using the online format and setting up a personalised profile page and sharing your online fundraising link with family and friends. Social media could be an easier way to connect with family near and far.
In the coming week, the SRC will officially launch the event and outline prizes for individuals and classes who are leading the charge with raising funds.
SPREADING HARMONY
We celebrate Harmony Week to recognise and to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Harmony Week is celebrated during the week (Monday to Sunday) that includes 21 March, which is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.
Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
SJV will celebrate Harmony week by completing some activities during the week and by celebrating that we all belong by having a cultural day on Harmony Day. On Tuesday 21st March, to show our support for cultural diversity and an being an inclusive school, we invite children to come to school dressed in a their family's cultural colours, cultural dress or orange. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
Part of the celebrations and to prepare us for Harmony week we will begin to say a school pledge each day:

Gospel Reflection Matthew 5:38-48
‘Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.’
This week's reflection comes from Sunday Connection from Loyola Press. This is a great resource for breaking open the messages of the Gospel as a family.
“There is no command in the Old Testament to hate individuals in a personal or vindictive way. But there is a religious stance that calls one to hate evil and to distance oneself from those who participate in evil. In contrast, Matthew emphasises that love of God and love of neighbour are the fundamental commands on which all else depend. Because God’s love is unconditional, we are to strive to love as God does, though, of course, it is challenging. Is it even possible?
The key is in the final verse. We are to be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect. Matthew uses the Greek word telos, which is probably better translated here as “complete.” We are not to be perfect as in doing everything correctly, that is, as in being absolutely morally correct. We are to be perfect as in striving to reach the completeness we are called to in the Kingdom of Heaven. Attempting to love our enemies is part of striving for that completeness.
Project Compassion
Ash Wednesday (22nd February) not only marks the beginning of Lent but also the launch of the school’s Project Compassion fundraising campaign. Project Compassion is a major fundraiser for Caritas which does extraordinary work around the world, particularly in developing countries. Kirsty Robertson, Caritas Australia CEO, recently wrote the following about the theme of this year’s campaign: The theme of Project Compassion is ‘For All Future Generations’. This phrase is a powerful affirmation that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It is also a call for all of us to play our part in making the world a better place by working together as sisters and brothers in finding long-term solutions to global issues. Throughout Lent, students will be encouraged to donate small amounts of money to their class’ Project Compassion box as part of a commitment to psalmsgiving throughout Lent. We encourage all students to give what they can to this worthy cause.
School Masses Term 1 2023
As a school, we regularly attend the Wednesday morning 9:30 am Mass at St John Vianney’s Church. The choir sings at this Mass and sometimes our students have a role in other parts of the celebration. Book Fair -
After the wonderful success of our last Book Fair, we will be hosting another Fair during Term Two. The Book Club and Book Fairs generate a huge amount of free books for our library. Thank you for the ongoing support you give towards the Scholastic Book Clubs and Fairs.
Help needed please!!
Do you have a knack for covering books? I would love your help please! If you would like to take some books and contact home to cover, or pop into the library to cover books with me, please let me know! Your help is very much appreciated!
Please help look after our books by sending in a library bag to carry borrowed books home. At the end of last year, we established a $10 fee for lost or damaged books and this can now be paid on Qkr! if needed. This fee will go towards buying replacement books when needed. If you have any questions please email me at janice.spackman@cg.catholic.edu.au
ELC NEWS
Happy Birthday to Jack K
This week we have started exploring the concept of prayer circle, the symbols that we use during prayer and discussion around Jesus and His family. Each class has created their own prayer mat to use during morning prayer as the mat brings us together.
Classes will be taking time to visit the church to explore the signs and symbols we see inside a church.
Parent Sharing Meetings – Thank you to those families who have made time to attend a Parent Sharing meeting with your child’s teacher. If you are yet to book a Parent Sharing meeting, please write your name on the booking sheet located on your classroom window or contact your teacher to arrange a suitable time.
Confirmation of Childcare Agreement
Please remember to return your signed Agreement to the ELC as soon as possible.
Car park
We continue to have issues with cars parking in the carpark in front of the school which is designated for ELC families. Please do not use this carpark if you do not have a child in the ELC. ELC families will be issued with a sign to display on the dashboard and any vehicles not displaying the sign will receive a notice to inform them of the car park expectations.
Student absences
Please advise the ELC office and your child’s teacher if your child is going to be absent from school and a brief description of why. We record all illnesses so we can track if there are any outbreaks that the community need to be aware of. This can be via phone or email.

the Easter holidays. The season ends early September, and games are not played on
long weekends or in school holidays. Training is usually held in the SJV grounds, straight
after school (depending on coach/player availability). All games at held at the netball courts
on Streeton Drive.
Players: Boys & Girls - Years 2-6 (if there are any keen Year 1s, they would also be warmly
welcomed to help Year 2 field a full team)

Tailored Experiences
The program at St John Vianney's Primary School Your OSHC is unique and tailored to the educational ethos and values of your school and the individual needs of the children in the service. In every before and afterschool session, your coordinator designs a featured activity to engage the children. Complementing the feature activity are experience zones that give children the freedom of choice and guide them to learn through play. Our Pupil Free Day sessions have at least three key feature activities, based around family and child feedback.
Pop into the Your OSHC service at St John Vianney's Primary School to chat to your Coordinator about the program.
