Dear SJV Families,
Happy New Year! The new Church year commences this weekend with the first Sunday of Advent.
Advent is a season of waiting; we wait with hope, desire and expectation. One of our Advent companions is Mary, and during these weeks we remember her as she waited for the birth of her child. We know what waiting is like, as many of us wait with anticipation for the holidays.
Advent is also a season to prepare for Christmas. We know that the first coming of Jesus at Bethlehem will not happen again, so during Advent, we prepare for a new coming of Jesus into our lives. We take this time every year to practise how to receive Jesus every day of our lives. We remember Jesus’ call to us, to make our world a peaceful and loving place, and so, during Advent, we make special efforts to be signs that God is with us. This is what the word ‘Emmanuel’ means – God-with-us.
Advent is a season with its own special mood, colours, sounds, words and joys. Sometimes it can be swamped by Christmas and we can be tempted to celebrate Christmas too early. This Advent, may we all try to wait, as the world waited long ago for the coming of Jesus, the “Light of the World”.
Make the most of it
Compass is the communication portal we use to share a great deal of information regarding your child. As well as providing a place to share and store your child’s end of year report, receive newsletters and other notes, receive excursion notes and give permission, it now has a more robust attendance section, providing further details and greater functionality.
By opening the Attendance tab, parents can see at a glance the attendance history of their child. It is also a convenient way to send a note into school explaining your child’s absence. If you need any help using the Compass App, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Many families have taken the opportunity to arrange a meeting with their child’s teacher/s next week. The booking system has closed, but if you still want to arrange a time, please contact your child’s teacher directly.
Raffle
Thanks to those families who have already sold their tickets. Special thanks to those who have sold extra books. Please remember that all raffle ticket stubs, sold or not, must be returned to school no later than Tuesday 6th December
Kindness Day and Colour Run
Last week was a special one at SJV. We had the Book Fair, which was attended by many families, and finished the week with Kindness Day activities. Though the whole day was enjoyable, the highlight certainly was the colour run at the end of the day. Check out our FaceBook page for some snaps of the fun (https://www.facebook.com/stjohnvianneysprimaryschoolwaramanga)
Special thanks to Mrs Janice Spackman for the Book Fair, and to Mrs Nina De Rosa for organising the Kindness Day. A big shout-out also, to our Year 6 leaders for the wonderful Sideshow Alley.
IGA Chapman
This afternoon we had a wonderful surprise from Carlie and Sarah Temple ex-students of SJV who handed over a cheque from Chapman IGA as a $322 donation to the school. Each year from their Community Chest Fund, they contribute to our school community. We are forever grateful for their support of our wonderful school.
Vinnies Appeal
Though money is tight at the moment, please consider those who are doing it even tougher. Our Vinnies Christmas appeal runs for one more week. Please help if you can.
School Fees
A reminder that school fees will be due at the end of term, apologies for the delay in sending them home, for those who are not on a regular direct debit with us I ask that you settle your account with us as soon as possible so that we are able to meet our budgetary commitments.
Semester Two Reports
Your child’s teacher is in the process of preparing Semester Two reports. There is a great deal of work and energy that goes into the writing of these documents, and I thank the teachers for their efforts. Reports will be made available to parents, on the Compass App, on Tuesday 13th December.
Library
Please have a look in your home for any SJV Library books that may not yet have found their way back to their own home. You can help us to minimise the number of books we need to replace by returning them as soon as possible please.

Gospel Reflection Matthew 24:37-44
‘So stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming.’
This Sunday marks the beginning of Advent and the start of the new liturgical year. In the ‘busyness’ and whirlwind of social gatherings and lists of things to do and buy, it is important that we take time to pause and reflect on what this time of year is truly about, the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This week’s gospel reminds us of a time, when people just like us were going about their everyday lives when the great flood arrived and changed the world. Matthew’s gospel reminds us that we need to be ready at all times for the arrival of our God.
World Mission Month
Congratulations to our Year 6 students for putting on a fun-filled afternoon for our students last Friday as part of our annual Side Show Alley fundraiser for Catholic Mission. The afternoon raised just over $400 and we thank you for your generous support of this cause.
St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal
St John Vianney’s will once again be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. The last two years have been a challenge for everyone, especially those experiencing disadvantage.
This year has come with new trials including the impacts of closed borders, global inflation, and the east coast energy crisis, putting pressure on people in Australia and being an added stress for people already experiencing hardship. We are asking for donations of non-perishable food which we will give to our local Vinnies volunteers to make hampers for those in need. Food items that can be donated are listed below, and are welcome to be dropped into the front office. The last day to drop off donations is Friday, December 2nd. We thank you for your support of this worthy cause.
End of Year School Masses
We will be celebrating two Masses as a school community to end our year. Our Thanksgiving Mass will be held on Tuesday 6th December, at 12:15pm. All parents and friends, particularly those who have volunteered their time to our school community this year, are warmly invited to attend. The Mass will be followed by an afternoon tea back at school. Invitations will go home shortly.
Our Year 6 Graduation Mass and Candle Ceremony for our Year 5 students, will be held on Wednesday 13th December, at 1:45pm. We especially invite the families of our Year 5 and 6 students to attend this Mass.
Parish BBQ
The annual Parish BBQ will make a welcome return this year. The event will be held in the hall at St John Vianney’s on Friday 2nd December, at 6:30pm. The Parish will be hosting the event and will provide food and drinks for everyone to enjoy. All parishioners are welcome to come along. We hope to see many of our families there.
Sacraments 2023
The Parish is appreciative of the feedback received from parents during this first year of the pilot program. Some positive changes to the structure have been made and dates for each Sacrament have been finalised. If you would like your child to receive any of the Sacraments next year, please register your child through the Parish QKR!

Students have been encouraged to talk about their hand of trusted people with their parents and to let their trusted people know that they have a very special role, as a trusted person, to be there to listen if they ever need help.

Best day ever @ the SJV fete!
Mega cash raffle: This is the major source of fundraising for the school and every ticket sale counts! Our Raffle was launched at the fete last Saturday. Yesterday, Raffle books were sent home with the children. If you would like more books, please contact Jet in the Front Office. The Raffle will be drawn Tuesday 13th December at 2pm. It would be fantastic if every family could sell at least one book. To ensure all sold tickets are entered in the drawer, please return all sold and unsold tickets and payment (cash or Qkr) to the front office.
Thanks to our wonderful parents Sarah Bourke, Rob Ayling, Leah Malpas, and students Dimitri Taflaga, Hayden Sjoberg, Anna and Alice Malpas for giving their time to sell the tickets. It was a very successful weekend, especially having the students involved !! who could resist our cherubs with their big wide eyes!!!! - they sold 7 books of tickets which is an amazing effort.
So to that end, we are looking for volunteers to again sell the tickets at Cooleman Court - bring your children they are a great asset for selling the tickets and they were fantastic ambassadors for the school.
Please contact Sonia Taflaga 0412 322 210 to let her know you can help out.
Sponsors
Big thanks to our wonderful sponsors!! We appreciate all the support that our sponsors give to us. Please show these businesses your support our Fete would not be the success it is without them. THANK YOU.!
