Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to the penultimate week, I have outlined some wonderful celebrations and people to think of as you move into the weekend.
Highly Accomplished Teacher
It is with great excitement that I would like to announce, that after much hard work and dedication to her craft, Mrs Leah Malpas has been accredited by TQII as a Highly Accomplished Teacher. This accreditation is recognition of the work Leah has completed in education as well as the countless hours she has spent documenting her journey. As a former assessor of HALT (Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers) applications I can confirm that this is not an easy journey to take. We are very proud that Leah has taken this step and celebrate her achievement.
Canteen - Wk 11 Last Week
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Karen Wilder for the amazing job that she has done running our Canteen, and through a Pandemic no less. Karen has been a tireless worker donating countless hours in an unpaid position, bringing innovation and enthusiasm to provide an excellent service to our school. She will be sorely missed.
Class Up Day Week 11 Cancelled - Class Lists Released in Wk 11
Unfortunately the school has decided to cancel our scheduled Class Up Day due to Covid guidelines. This day is when we have the students spend Thursday afternoon with their 2022 teacher. We are currently looking for innovative ways where the 2022 classroom teacher can touch base with their future students. Next week student lists with associated teachers will be published on Thursday afternoon.
Semester Awards - Virtual
Next week we will be presenting our Semester Awards on Friday morning. More information will be sent out to parents via Class Dojo. These presentations will either be live streamed or photos posted directly to Class Dojo with information attached. I look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students.
Year 6 Graduation Mass and Graduation Dinner Thanks
I would like to thank Mrs Laura Matchett for organising today's mass with the very able assistance of Tanya Dunley and Mrs Mary Mullamphy. This was a special mass celebrating seven years of an educational journey for many students.
I would also like to thank Emma McDonald who has led an amazing team to prepare a wonderful Year 6 Graduation at the Southern Cross Club. From disco's to Graduation Cake, to invitations and seating plans, let alone the countless hours of organising decorations, this Year 5 Parent Team has done the lot. If you see a Year 5 parent over the next week, please thank them for their amazing efforts.
Congratulations Carl
In this adjoining photo, our Year 5 student Carl is a recipient of an award given by the Association of the Order of Australia for Sustained Community Service. Carl is a model for the service he gives of his time to two churches in our local and adjoining parish. This has been measured by the Association against applicants from all over Canberra. Well done Carl!

To tinsel or not to tinsel?
Many conversations have been had trying to win the debate of whether or not to use tinsel on a Christmas Tree. After much discussion and debate unfortunately no agreement has been reached amongst the current SJV staff.
There are many stories about how the decorated Christmas tree became a tradition still used today. The story I like to share is one that began in Germany over 1,000 years ago when St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of people worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut the oak tree down and to his amazement a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith and his followers decorated the tree with candles so that St Boniface could preach at night time. It wasn’t until the 16th Century that fir trees were brought indoors at Christmas time.
I wish to take this opportunity to wish the school community a safe and Holy Christmas season. May you all enjoy family time and a relaxing holiday period. Please look after each other and be safe in travels and festivities.
