Welcome to the end of Week 7. The end of the year fast approaches but there is still much left to do.
Lord, may nothing separate me from You today. Teach me how to choose only Your way today so each step will lead me closer to You. Help me walk by the Word and not my feelings.
Help me to keep my heart pure and undivided. Protect me from my own thoughts, words, and actions.
Help me to embrace what comes my way as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience.
Covid 19 Road Map for SJV
Thank you for the support and patience you have shown regarding the school’s enforcement of the COVID regulations. We are endeavouring to maintain a safe learning space for students and staff. Clearly, our number one priority is to avoid the lockdowns which have recently occurred at many Canberra schools. For this reason, we continue to follow the Road Map issued by CE who are implementing ACT Health Guidelines.
I appreciate that for those not working in schools this may appear to be contrary to the direction in which Canberra is now heading. An example of this is that all staff inside the school must wear masks and children from Year 3-6 are still encouraged to do so. I know you will appreciate why we continue to follow this conservative approach
Compass Portal - Booking Parent/Teacher Interviews
Next week we will be bringing another event onto the Compass Portal for parents to be able to use. Parent Teacher Interview appointment slots will go live on Monday in the Compass Portal. This will be the second activity to go live and we hope by the end of the year we will have brought further 'Events' on board such as Class Excursions and Absence Notifications.
The idea of Compass is that it will be the main form of school communication, alongside our Newsletter and Facebook. The link below will go live for bookings on Monday by 3pm.

Professional Learning Opportunity for Parents - Tuesday 23rd November 6pm-8pm
I have been contacted by Catherine Page Jeffery, who is leading a project aimed at reducing family conflict related to digital media and technology use, and fostering understanding between parents and their children about media technologies. They will be running a series of two hour workshops designed for families, parents and their children.
A workshop at Weston Creek Community Centre is scheduled for next Tuesday 23rd November from 6-8pm. The workshops are free and they will provide pizza and refreshments. The project is funded by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner under their Online Safety Grants Program. Attached to this newsletter is a project information sheet which contains more details about the project, including how families can sign up.
If families cannot make the Weston Creek workshop, they will be running other workshops throughout the region until early December. These dates can be found on their website, along with more information about the project https://www.safeonlinetogether.com/
Kindergarten Orientation Day
On Wednesday we were joined by the 2022 Kindergarten children as they participated in their Orientation Day. Unfortunately, the day had to be scaled down in order to comply with COVID regulations, this meant a drop-off by parents who could not stay onsite and were given information over MS Teams. Nevertheless, the children still had an opportunity to meet our Kindergarten teacher and their classmates.
God bless you and your families
Peter Rodda
Principal
Please note - Merit Awards will be handed out at NEXT Friday's morning assembly.

Reducing conflict within families around media and technology use
Is device and technology use a source of conflict in your household?
Are you concerned about your children’s use of technology, but struggle to manage it?
Researchers from the University of Canberra, in partnership with Community Services #1 and Capital Region Community Services, are holding a series of workshops with families to help them navigate and manage media and technology use at home.
Is this another cyber safety presentation?
No. Rather than focusing primarily on risk, workshops are aimed at promoting mutual understanding of media use between parents and their children, to help families negotiate media use and reduce conflict. We aim to help families maximise the benefits of digital media technologies while minimising the risks.
Who can attend?
Workshops are aimed at families with at least one child aged between approximately 11-16. While the entire family does not need to attend (but are welcome to!), workshops are designed for parent/s and their children together.
When will they be happening?
A series of workshops will be held from November to December 2021. If you are interested in participating, please get in touch at safeonlinetogether@canberra.edu.au or go to safeonlinetogether.com and sign up there.
Is there a cost?
No – the workshops are free, and we will provide pizza and refreshments.
Can I tell others about the workshops?
Yes!
Is this a research project?
While our primary goal is to help families, data generated from the workshops will be collected to evaluate the project and inform ongoing research and future initiatives. While some of this data may be published in scholarly journals, all data will be anonymised to protect the privacy of participants. The project has been approved by the University of Canberra Human Research Ethics Committee (approval 6876).
How do I sign up?
Get in touch with us at safeonlinetogethercanberra.edu.au or go to safeonlinetogether.com where you can also find out more about the project.
All families have received their log in details via email for our new Compass Parent Portal. The Compass Parent Portal is an online portal that allows you to interact with the school and access up-to-date information. The Skoolbag app will be discontinued at the end of this year. Once you have your log-in credentials and download the app, you’ll be able to:
- Enter absence notes for your child
- Give consent for excursions
- View school reports
- Communicate with your child’s teacher
- Book parent-teacher interviews
- Receive communication from staff
If you didn’t receive log in details, please contact our Front Office office.sjv@cg.catholic.edu.au or check your “junk” mailbox.

Youth Ministry Update
Sunday Resource
For this week’s Sunday resource, please access this our parish bulletin available at our link under the children’s section - Praying With Children: https://stjjvwestoncreek.blogspot.com/p/bulletins.html This worksheet reflects upon this Sunday’s Gospel reading (Mark 13: 24-32) where we hear about Jesus’ conversation with Pontius Pilate before he is sentenced to death on the cross. When considering the events in this week’s gospel, we are encouraged to listen to the words of Christ when he says; “…I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.”
Parish News
With further easing of restrictions, our churches are available to accommodate a higher number of parishioners! Please feel encouraged in returning to the mass in person with your families. The parish will also be continuing to stream Sunday morning masses on YouTube at 9am as per usual. To access the mass for the Thirty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary time (Year B) online, please access this link: https://www.youtube.com/user/stjjv .
The parish Christmas party is being held this year at st John Vianney's on the 3rd of December! Please keep an eye out on this week’s parish bulletin for registration and further details of how the afternoon will run. We hope to see you there!
Feast of Christ The King
What's your ideal Sunday? Everyone loves a sleep-in, how about a cruisy morning Mass? Followed by a family picnic lunch with live music to top it off? Next Sunday 21st November St Christopher’s Cathedral will be celebrating World Youth Day at the 11 am Sunday Mass with a picnic lunch to follow. All youth in the church are being celebrated, and this includes your young children and families! We'd love to see you there. First initiated by St John Paul II in 1985, then Pope John Paul II imagined World Youth Day to be a powerful moment in which young people of the world could meet Christ, who is eternally young, and could learn from him how to be bearers of the Gospel to other young people. Typically this would be a large-scale international celebration, but we're making the most of it this year staying local to enjoy the Canberra scene in Manuka. See below for extra details.
Yours in Christ,
Elena Catanzariti ( elena.catanzariti@cg.org.au )

ELC NEWS
Happy Birthday Sullivan F
It is an exciting time of year as the current ELC children begin their formal transition to primary school. Many of the children attended the Kinder Orientation Day at St Jude’s and St John Vianney’s yesterday morning. When they returned there were so many exciting stories to share of the activities completed and the new friends that were made. It’s been wonderful to watch their independence and confidence grow this year and we trust they will have a smooth transition to primary school.
Holiday Care December
The ELC will be offering Holiday Care on Monday 20 – Wednesday 22 December. Please note that bookings for Holiday Care will not be accepted if fees are in arrears.
Disabled parking
Please do not park in the disabled parking space unless you have a permit to do so. The space next to the disabled park is not a parking space, it is a ‘keep clear’ space for emergency services and to use as a turning bay.
ELC Fees
Today we have sent account statements which include fees for the remainder of the year – Weeks 9, 10, 11 and Holiday Care. Fees are due next Friday 26 November. Your efforts to pay fees on time are appreciated.
Christmas Photography Fundraiser
Fifth Lane Photography are offering Christmas portrait sessions. Shopping centre Santa photos won’t quite be the same this year so this is a wonderful alternative. The ELC will receive $20 for each session booked.
