Child Safeguarding Commitment

The safeguarding of our students is a key priority of St John Vianney’s. Safeguarding is a term used to describe the protection of and human rights of vulnerable people. This may be due to their age, culture or trauma background, or they may be at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Anyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play.  Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn is committed to keeping children safe in all schools.
We have adopted the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Child Safeguarding Commitment, which states:

Here is SJV's Child Safeguarding Commitment:

Listening to the voices of children 'Jesus said: "Let the little come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs” MT18

  • St John Vianney’s Primary School is committed to child safety.
  • We support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers.
  • St John Vianney’s is committed to our children being safe, happy and empowered participants of our community.
  • We have zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very seriously and consistently in accordance with our robust policies and procedures.
  • St John Vianney’s is committed to preventing child abuse and identifying risks early, and removing and reducing these risks.
  • We have legal and moral obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety.
  • St John Vianney’s has robust recruitment practices to reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing School Community Council members, school staff and volunteers.
  • We are committed to regularly training and educating our School Community Council members, staff and volunteers on child abuse risks.
  • St John Vianney’s is committed to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability.
  • We have specific policies and procedures in place that support our School Community Council members, staff and volunteers to achieve these commitments.

A Health-Conscious Community

As winter has begun, we are at that time of year when sickness is prevalent. Over the past few weeks, we have had several staff members away, and unfortunately, there are times when we cannot provide relief teachers due to high demand. During these instances, we do our best to cover classes with other staff members. However, there are occasions when children are placed in another class with 'A day away pack'.
If your child is ill, please keep them at home for their own benefit and to prevent spreading the illness to other students and staff. Ensure that your emergency contacts are up-to-date so we can quickly reach you if your child becomes ill or is injured at school. If your child needs medication at school, you must complete an “Administration of Medication” form, available at the Front Office.
School Photos
The 2024 school photos will be taken on Wednesday, June 19th. On this day, students are kindly reminded to wear their full winter school uniforms, including jumpers, to ensure a unified and polished look in the photographs. MSP has provided information on how to order, and you can place orders through the Compass Portal. Once you have submitted your Individual Photo order, you can then place your Sibling Photo order. Please note that these MUST be ordered before midnight on the day of the photo. If you have any questions regarding the photography service or packages available for purchase, please contact the MSP team on 02 6255 9208 or by email canberra.office@msp.com.au.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability

Australian, state and territory governments have agreed on a new approach to collecting data on school students with disability. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability NCCDSSD) provides Australian schools, parents, education authorities and the community with information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the adjustments they receive.

The national data collection on students with disability reinforces the existing obligations that schools have towards students under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. It counts the number of students who are supported under these obligations based on the professional judgement of teachers and their understanding and knowledge of their students.

At SJV adjustment data is collected through a child's Personal Plan. More information about the collection of data can be found: https://www.nccd.edu.au

"If we had no Winter, the Spring would not be so pleasant:

If we did not sometimes taste adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."
