Dear SJV Community

Welcome to the end of Wk 7.

Yesterday 5/6P did a wonderful job preparing and hosting mass for the whole school.  As part of this Mass we were also fortunate enough to welcome one of our students into God's family.

Lord, thank you for the precious gift of baptism, that we can publicly declare our love and passion for you. Lord, we ask for your goodness and blessings to be poured out on this child. We pray that you would work deeply within their heart and soul to renew and refresh them each day. Come guide their footsteps, give them a hope and a vision for the future.

Welcome Grayson

It was very exciting to welcome Grayson into the church community as we celebrated his Baptism on Wednesday morning at our School Mass.  It was also a unique experience for many of our students who have not seen a Baptism.  The theme of our Mass fit beautifully into the ceremony as we discussed the importance of God's family, one to which we all belong.

Think U Know - 26th June 6pm

All parents and carers are encouraged to attend a ThinkUKnow presentation on 25 June. This program supports the Cybersafety and Well-being topics that are covered in ICT and Health/Library classes. Currently we are trying to organise child supervision for families so as many parents as possible can attend this information session.

Date: 25 Jun 2024
Time: 6:00PM
Location: School Library

ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence based education program delivered nationally to prevent online child sexual exploitation.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member and an industry volunteer. The presentation is pro-technology and addresses topics including self-generated child abuse material, online grooming, sexual extortion, and importantly encourages help seeking behaviour.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.

Please RSVP via Qkr! by Tuesday 24th June.

Reports Wk 9

Teacher's are busily working on your children's Semester 1 reports which will be available on Compass on Friday 28th July.  I am hoping that all parents managed to speak with their teacher last week at Parent/Teacher interviews as this meeting will have given you a good idea of how your child is tracking and areas that require some extra attention.

Please note the slight changes in terminology for reports in all Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn schools.

For Kindergarten students:

  • Achievement in each subject is reported using a four-point scale (Above Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Working Towards Expectations, Experiencing Difficult

For Year 1 to Year 6 students:

  • Academic grades for each subject using a five-point scale from A-E will be reported using the ACT Common Grade Scale.

For all students:

  • Strand Achievement will be reported in English, Mathematics, Human Society and its Environment, PDHPE and Creative Arts using a five-point scale (Consistently, High, At Standard, Partial, Limited).

  • Engagement with Learning statements, which are taken directly from the Australian Curriculum, will provide specific information about your child’s Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Responsibility, using a three-point scale (Consistently, Usually, Developing, Needs Improvement).

  • Individual student comments will NOT be used in the Semester 1 Reports.

Attendance

As part of our school's governance we are always reviewing student attendance.  This is a reminder to parents that students, by law, are required to attend school.    ACARA recommends that the minimum amount of attendance is 90%. I will be reaching out to families where a pattern of absences are pointing toward significant loss of school attendance. These absences will ultimately affect academic progress and social interaction with peers. If your child is ill, then they should stay home, otherwise we need them in our classrooms.

SAVE THE DATE - Trivia Night Term 3 Friday 2nd August - SAVE THE DATE

The Yr 5/6 class contacts have reached out via Compass to be the contact points to help form a team for the running of this event.

There is a flyer attached to this newsletter which outlines how you can help.  The Trivia night has support from past events and with a team behind it is always a great community night.  If you have not put your hand up for an event in the last couple of years, this is one that you should nominate for.

Kinder Enrolment Interviews

By the end of this week I will have completed kinder interviews.  It is shaping up to be a wonderful class with a good split of girls and boys for 2025.  If you know of a family that is looking for an amazing school, don't forget to recommend SJV, as we still will have space in next year's class.

Long Service Leave

This year I have some planned and approved leave occurring each term, as such I will be taking LSL in Week 9 and 10.  Fortunately, Nina De Rosa our Assistant Principal and Emma Donaghue our Religious Education Coordinator will be able to continue the smooth running of SJV in my absence.
