A message from the Assistant Principal and Mrs D's "Thought of the Week" -

with Nina De Rosa

Science Week has been AWESOME!!

On Monday, Year 5/6 visited the CSIRO Discovery Centre and investigated all things Science. They used iPads and QR codes to investigate questions throughout the different displays and discovered what has been invented and researched at the CSIRO site! They finished their excursion with a wonderful walk through the Botanical Gardens.

Kinder to Year 4 were super excited to be catching the bus to Questacon Monday morning!! They looked at robotic cats, created shadows, experienced lightning and earthquakes, played with mirrors, created towers, watched paper cups fly in the wind, played on a building site and some were daring enough to drop from a height on the free fall slide!

On Tuesday we were so lucky to have the St Clare’s College SWITCH team visit with their innovations and robotics. Wow!! These girls are amazing! It was exciting to see two past students Olivia and Elaine.  These girls explained how they created their robots and how they have needed to make changes to their designs. They demonstrated how the robots can move and pick up blocks to create points for their upcoming competition. Good luck girls!

The St Clare’s girls also highlighted a recent innovation they have created which they will be presenting in Adelaide in the next few weeks. The girls have designed and created a luminescent road sign to help keep our night road workers and drivers safe. We look forward to seeing this initiative on our roads soon. Amazing work girls and good luck in Adelaide. Thank you to Mrs Major and the girls for taking the time to visit us and show us the amazing things we can achieve in our future.

Do you know what an aileron is? Wednesday saw paper aeroplanes flying through our library skies as some students participated in a recess workshop with Questacon, "Foldable Flight". We looked at the different parts of an aeroplane and why they are important. A dart paper aeroplane demonstration was given and off to the sky these planes flew!!

Lunchtime we created a chemical reaction treat, by mixing fizzy drink and ice cream together! Be careful how fast you pour that fizzy drink!! Ice cream or fizzy drink first?

Friday lunchtime will see towers made from spaghetti and play doh!! Who can create the highest tower??? Year 5/6 will also participate in a workshop looking at the future of food.. will technology change what we eat???

A huge thank you to Mrs Spackman who has managed to ensure SJV celebrated Science Week with interesting and engaging activities.

SUPERHERO WEDNESDAY
The community had a great day taking part in SuperHIRO Wednesday yesterday.  We wore our favourite superhero outfit or symbol to show how we stand up to bullies.  We reinforced our rules that at SJV we ALL have the right to feel safe, to learn and to be respected.  The school made a donation on behalf or all families to Bully Zero Australia Foundation. This foundation works to prevent and reduce bullying through evidence-based education, advocacy, and support for all communities across Australia.
