Gospel Reflection Matthew 5:13-16
‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house.
During our professional learning week last week, the staff participated in a retreat day which, in part, focused on the life and work of St John Vianney. As a school this year, we will be exploring some of the qualities and virtues St John Vianney displayed during his ministry in the hope that we can all learn to be more like him. One such virtue that St John Vianney possessed was the gift of piety or reverence. His deep love for God was shown through his passion and joy for prayer, his simplistic lifestyle and his dedication to the Sacrament for Reconciliation, hearing confessions sometimes for up to 18 hours a day. The phrase ‘doing ordinary things extraordinarily well’ is spoken of St John Vianney, or put another way, he let his light shine. The message of this week’s Gospel in many ways is exactly this. We too need to let our lights shine, no matter how small or insignificant we may think our light is, our small acts of kindness, charity and decency can make a world of difference, and is a small way in which we share our faith with others.
