Message from Assistant Principal Jo Reed

Dear Parents and Carers,

Caring for ourselves and our children:

You can’t pour from a cup if it is empty!’

With the present lockdown and work from home environment, we at SJV would like to commend all of our parents and community for binding together to create a sense of normality and connection.

We believe this is a great opportunity for our children to not segregate education to solely being on campus, and free activity to be outside of it. If we are able to integrate an enjoyment of learning at home, our children will shift the learning experience to be one that extends past their time in the classroom - a mindset they will carry with them for life.

Children learn from a very young age to mirror their parents. The first time we may notice this is when a certain choice word you let slip is repeated loudly from the back of the car – but this mirroring extends further. The way we approach education is often mirrored in our young children. During these times, we must try to maintain positivity so we don’t instil a negative subtext to this.

And while yes, it is important to practise patience towards our children who are not typically used to orderly learning outside the school grounds, it is equally important to maintain some self-care for ourselves who are stretched thin for those we love.

A large amount of content has been released online on what to do, when to do it, and how to do it when educating from home. SJV understands that these times put extra strain on families, and we want to say keep it up, you’re doing a great job! Make sure you take some time to unwind, take a bath, and enjoy time alone to recharge. We are all in this together - the best way to take care of each other, is to start with ourselves!

Take care and blessings on your families.

Stay safe and well.

Jo Reed
